The Fanfara Els tres tambors (Fanfare The three Drums) is written for the opening concert of the Valles Symphony Orchestra, 2010-11 season. Its theme, funky and decided it was perfect for a piece of this genre, with brass instruments, it couldn't miss the piccolo nor the drum in the percussion. The main theme is contrasted and encouraged by two other rhythmic ideas of my own that provide the piece with dynamism and a festive air.

As the title suggests, this opening work consists of a fanfare and a hymn. This work was written for the opening ceremony of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf (Allgäu, Germany) and can be played in four different versions depending on your needs or the players available. You can use a complete version, a short fanfare played just by trumpets (cornets), trombones and timpani, a double fanfare (extended with tutti-band) or a fanfare version followed by the hymn. The work opens with a stern fanfare in bare fifths, which leads to a cantabile theme introduced by alto saxophone. This builds to a climax and reintroduces the fanfare, which slowly evolves into the subsequent vivo. A perky tune emerges on flute, saxophone and trumpet, which, after a short bridge passage, leads to a contrasting melody on low clarinets and saxophones. After some development a true ‘second subject’ appears for the whole band. A recapitulation leads briefly back to the opening fanfare before the vivo returns to close the work in celebratory mood.

Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!

Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida’s involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work.

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to “Nulli Secundusâ€, the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp’s own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!

These eight little solos are intended to supply easy, descriptive pieces for the beginner horn player which are not only beneficial for technical development but will also be useful performance material. The tunes are characteristically horn-like in nature. So setzen Sie Ihre Musiker ins rechte Licht!

Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for ‘to excel’ but also celebrates the band’s anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close.

Exultation is a short and energetic concert opener that is similar to a palindrome. A fanfare opens the work, juxtaposing 3/4 and 6/8, reminiscent of Latin-American music. The main theme is first heard on the euphonium, horns and saxophones which is very bluesy. The contrasting second theme is short and spikey and played by the bass instruments of the band. A lyric melody emerges as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The second theme reappears which leads back to the ‘blues’ melody, which leads back to the opening fanfare. Palindromic!

Satoshi Yagisawa is well known for his dramatic symphonic band compositions. Even though he has written relatively few marches, they are also very popular: March Willing and Able is based on a chorale while March Bou Shu is based on a Japanese folk song. The Memory of Our Native Place is a rather unusual piece for Yagisawa, as it actually closely resembles a traditional march. The piece opens with a lively fanfare and is contrasted by the following theme. The trio features a chorale-like melody. The Memory of Our Native Place beginnt mit einer strahlenden Fanfare, bevor ein inniges Thema erklingt.

This piece was commissioned by Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra to commemorate their 30th Anniversary. The composer was inspired by Oyama City’s slogan, ‘water, green and earth’, to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfare leads to a magnifi cent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener.
