The title Marchenbilder, or Fairy-tale Pictures, borrowed from Schumann, awakens notions of music which in itself has a pictorial quality. In all, the score comprises six Fairytale Pictures, the first three of which form the first movement, the next two the second, whilst the sixth forms the last movement which is linked with the second without a break. The first two pictures have the same duration - one minute each - whilst the remainder hesitantly inerease in length until the final picture is almost five minutes long. For 14 instruments.

A visit to the opera whetted the composers creative appetite to explore the fairy-tale-like theme of Knight Raimunds love for the beautiful mermaid Melusine, which provided the basis for Mendelssohns fourth concert overture. As usual, Mendelssohn worked out the composition in his mind before committing it to paper, a task he most likely began towards the end of March 1833. The works premiere performance took place in London on 7 April 1834; the revised version was given its first account in Leipzig on 23 November 1835. Its ranking as No. 4 of the concert overtures was assigned around 1857 in a posthumous edition.(Ralf Wehner in the Study Edition of the Mendelssohn Work Catalogue).

In the summer of 1852, Vier Stücke ['Four Pieces'] for viola and piano by Robert Schumann were published under the title Märchenbilder ['Fairy-Tale Pictures'] by the Kassel publishing house Luckhardt, with a particularly expressive vignette on the titlepage. Unusual were both this title Märchenbilder, on the one hand, and the scoring with a solo viola, on the other. With the viola in a soloistic role in chamber music, Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, offers a rather unfamiliar, but all the more delightful sound.

The Fairy-Tale Narratives (Märchenerzählungen) for B-flat Clarinet (ad libitum Violin), Viola and Piano, Op. 132, belong to the few Schumann works that were composed, revised and published in a short time: composed in Düsseldorf, at beginning of October 1853, the new composition was already offered for publication to the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house on 3 November and printed in February1854. Composition and publication of the Märchenerzählungen were accompanied, though, by difficult times, the final days before the composer was admitted to the psychiatric clinic in Endenich. The work's reception lies in the shadow of the last creative period: The pieces were associated with his life's darker phases and were very little played. The Märchenerzählungen transmit Schumann's single work for this unusual piano trio with viola and clarinet. The only well-known earlier example in this setting at that time is Mozart's “Kegelstatt” Trio K 498 (composed in 1786). Schumann was certainly already acquainted with the work from his Leipzig years - it was played in one of the “quartet sessions” in 1829. This edition is based on a new edition of all Schumann works, Volume II / 3.

Nerval's Poems is based on four poems from the collection Odelettes by the French poet Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855). This psychotic poete maudit lived in the realms of his imagination, where he identified himself with fairy-tale princes and Oriental heroes. In Nerval's Poems, Jacob de Haan has composed the themes directly to the rhythm of the texts. Thus the work can be performed instrumentally or with a vocal soloist or unison choir. A tremendously poetic work that will enhance any concert programme.Das viersätzige Werk Nerval’s Poems basiert auf ebenso vielen Gedichten aus der Sammlung Odelettes des französischen Dichters Gérard de Nerval aus dem 19. In 1828 Berlioz wrote the Huit scènes de Faust. The work was soon withdrawn but almost twenty years later each of the eight scenes found a place in the Lgende dramatique La damnation de Faust dedicated to Franz Liszt. The first part of the Damnation exposes the figure of Faust and has an introductory nature. From the second part onwards, the course of action is largely based on Goethe’s drama.Contrasting characters and dramatic effect are of central importance in understanding Berlioz’s musical thought and his compositional process. Magic and fairy tale, incantations and ghosts, have been the ever-recurring themes of opera since the Baroque. It is precisely this fantasy in Berlioz's Faust, the “Opra de Concert en Quatre acts”, which comes very close to the spirit of Goethe's presentation.

Simultaneously, he corresponded with the poet about cuts and revisions of the libretto, and, towards the end of the year, even let himself be persuaded by friends to orchestrate it. Der Rose Pilgerfahrt was given its first performances in Dusseldorf and Leipzig in February and March 1852 in this full-scored version before being printed in late 1852.Piano vocal score by the composerIn late March 1851, Robert Schumann was sent a copy of the fairy tale Der Rose Pilgerfahrt. As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with fairy tales: with their archetypal characters and set phrases like'Once upon a time...'and'...they all lived happily ever after'. Fairy tales were however also a source of unrest for me as a seismograph of mankinds underlying primal fears and desires. So as a performer and composer I have always felt that Robert Schumann's Marchenerzahlungen [Fairy Tales] (scored for the same instrumentation as my own composition) was a disjointed, complex contemporary work - despite the innocence and naivety of its initial appearance. I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal (Once upon a time...)to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals.
