Programme Note: The name Event Horizon was coined by the brilliant British physicist Stephen Hawking to describe the circumference of a so-called black hole, the remains of a collapsed star with a gravity-pull so powerful, so that not even light can escape from it. This 5-minute study for piano has - needles to say - nothing to do with black holes, but the term event horizon fascinates med and strikes me as near-perfect description of virtually any stretch of organized sound evolving in time, e.g. a musical composition with a strong linear focus. So - Event Horizon it is, as seamless composition of high density, evolving in three parts: swinging-ricocheting-sweeping, amusical journey of speed, from fast to furiously fast, a study based on a high economical compositional material constantly renewing itself, the hands running parallel, separating, meeting again. The discreetest use of pedaling is advised ... Poul Ruders May 2001.

According to the composer, the sonata for alto saxophone and piano, which he regards as his first mature composition, takes its title from the astronomical term referring to the spacetime boundary in a black hole beyond which light can no longer escape - a point of no return. Event Horizons is an intensely emotional piece, stemming from reflections on the immensity of the universe and one's own place in it. The title was merely a catalyst, an image that sparked the creative process. Whittall was also greatly affected by the spaciousness and subtle intricacies of Eastern music - the gamelan music of Bali in particularly. Much of the resulting music is reminiscent of the ringing of bells or gongs, which in so many cultures has great ceremonial and spiritual importance. They can be seen as a symbol of connection between the natural and meta-physical worlds. At its core, Event Horizons is an intense rite of passage, a quest for ultimate understanding, and perhaps reaches it, at least in part.

I compose a piece of music each year to be premiered by our annual University of Mobile High School Honor Band. A New Horizon was composed for the 2021 Honor Band during the most challenging season in memory. Taking place during the pandemic, the Honor Band was held outdoors under a large, open tent with distancing and health protocols in place. Though not ideal and full of challenges, it was a successful, memorable and thankfully healthy event. I felt that it was important to have a joyful, upbeat, hopeful piece of music to introduce to these students and this was the result. The title itself is a reminder that hope remains and we should keep our eyes on the future: a new horizon. The tempo should remain bright and steady, articulations are critically important and need to be accurately crisp. Dynamics are intended to be dramatic, so do not be afraid to overdo - particularly dynamic swells and subito changes.I compose a piece of music each year to be premiered by our annual University of Mobile High School Honor Band. “A New Horizon” was composed for the 2021 Honor Band during the most challenging season in memory. A new day. A new event. A new opportunity. We look forward to these things and the potential they hold. We live our lives looking forward, but we understand them looking backward (a thought of Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard). We do not always know what the future may hold, but we must remember: first, there are no guarantees beyond the time and opportunity we are given to do good. Second, change around us is inevitable. Finally, and the most important aspect, we have choices. This lesson is fixed to the composer's office door: Today is the greatest day of your life, if you want it to be. Why not look forward to the Promise on the Horizon and the possibilities for greatness that lie within it? The opening motif of this concert fanfare is purposely inquisitive as the piece seeks to establish its first steps. The subtle shift at measure 37 and again at measure 69 are reminders of the challenges that await us during the journey. Here again it is a matter of choice - do we choose to let circumstances define us, or do we define the circumstances? The section at 93 is a resounding answer that we will move barriers, overcome obstacles and keep our vision looking forward. The piece builds toward an exciting conclusion from measure 127 onward. The piece reinforces several basic rhythmic patterns in 6/8 time. As a number of these rhythms are repeated, it provides an easy opportunity for the entire ensemble to grow more comfortable performing in this meter. While it is a fanfare-type piece, remind young musicians to play with lightness and precision, rather than intensity in volume. Maintaining this style of articulation and accuracy helps the rhythms in 6/8 time maintain their buoyancy. It is vital that each musician listens for the melody and balances their part, especially in moments where the melody is passed between sections. If vibes are not available, a second bell set can be employed in its place. It is hoped that this piece is an uplifting way to open your next concert, and a meaningful opportunity for you to discuss the power of making positive choices with your students in the ensemble (as a reminder, regular practicing of their instrument is a positive choice). Wishing you and your ensemble well as you look to the Promise on the Horizon.A new day. A new event. A new opportunity. We look forward to these things and the potential they hold. The composer writes the following about this work: 'As if we could only walk sideways in a tilted force field, Petruska-Harlequin in my piece evokes waltz fragments on a capsized 'Titanic', or Berlioz's Romeo und Juliet. Vertiginous chromatic martellato-staccato sequences keep tearing apart the clarinet's virtuosic aerial gymnastics interspersed among the fragments and half-heard wisps of sound. We suddenly find ourselves now in the depths, now in the highest regions, sidelong, as if all these fragments of musical memories were dancing on the edge of the event-horizon of a black hole...' This work, dedicated to the clarinettist Csaba Klenyan, was composed in 2002 in Saskatoon (Canada).

Roger Zare is living every young composer's dream. At a tender age, he has already been lauded by the best, and his compositions continue to earn awards. Green Flash, his first publication with Theodore Presser Company, was written in 2007 for the USC Thornton Symphony, received a BMI Student Composer award in 2007, was chosen to be read at the 2008 American Composers Orchestra Underwood New Music Readings, won the ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Prize in 2009, and has now won the 2012 Symphony in C Young Composers' Competition. For more about Green Flash and a YouTube video of the premiere performance, see the composer's website (www.rogerzare.com/greenflash.htm).A “green flash” is a rare atmospheric phenomenon that occurs as a sunset reaches its end. If conditions are just right, then a spark of green will hover on the horizon for a fleeting moment as the sun disappears. I first witnessed this subtle effect in Florida in 2005. Seeing the mythical event for the first time inspiredthis composition. Green Flash is a musical journey from daybreak to sunset. It focuses on the manipulation of colors and textures throughout its five sections. The musical events are designed to paint a picture of various scenes during the day. The piece begins with the heartbeat of the world emerging from the silentdarkness of the night. As night transitions to dawn, waves of color propagate from the repeating low C, building up through the harmonic series to become the vibrant colors of sunrise. Eventually all twelve notes of the chromatic scale are sounding together. Abruptly, a morning fog engulfs the scene. Out of the mist rises the only melodic theme in the work, played by a solo English horn, and later taken up by other solo winds. Once the fog dissipates, the sky fills with the playful dance of wispy cirrus clouds. A rainbow-like halo surrounds the sun, adding a burst of color to the scene. This carefree, optimistic cloud dance is invaded by a menacing front of cumulonimbus clouds. A storm rages at a frantic pace, but in its dying breath yields the most glorious of sunsets. Only as the last glint of sunlight disappears below the horizon, a faint sparkle of green lingers in the atmosphere.

Kaleidoscope Sky is inspired by the breathtaking pastime of hot-air ballooning and the glorious festivals around the world that honor the practice. A sky full of colorful spheres elegantly floating at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, Mondial Air Ballons and more draw thousands of people to witness awe-inspiring scenes full of passionate balloonists. Traditional hot-air balloons mix with creatively designed balloons to thrill the tens of thousands of spectators below. While I personally am not a person who dreams of taking my own flight--heights are not my thing--I have to marvel at how gently and easily these vessels float among the clouds. It truly is an image of exquisite freedom. This piece reflects the view and experience of the onlooker taking in an elegantly shifting scene reminiscent of kaleidoscope patterns. Spectators like me can appreciate the beauty and vibrancy associated with a horizon full of adventurous balloonists and their wondrous aircrafts. Kaleidoscope Sky starts in a triumphant and celebratory fashion and continues to conjure images reminiscent of the wide variety of soaring colors on display at a hot-air balloon event. Ultimately, the piece appropriately concludes with a suspenseful, yet graceful, run to the finish line. Melodic lines should soar with attention being paid to phrase markings and assigned articulations. Encourage musicians to allow room for the melodic material to be heard in thicker textures where supporting harmonies are often rhythmic in nature. These harmonies should support, and not cloud the melodies. The meter changes should sound effortless, and the continuous figures in the percussion will help to achieve this effect. The snare drum, in particular, should bring accented notes to the foreground while maintaining a steady textural effect with non-accented notes as a rhythmic background. This will go a long way in finding a cohesive subdivision and ensemble pulse.Kaleidoscope Sky is inspired by the breathtaking pastime of hot-air ballooning and the glorious festivals around the world that honor the practice. Earthrise is the name of an iconic NASA photograph, taken on December 24, 1968 from the Apollo 8 spacecraft while orbiting the Moon. Composer Steven Pyter depicts this historical event with the evocative tone poem for developing bands. A flute solo (cued in other instruments if needed) floats above rich sonorities. The flute's melody is passed around the band and eventually is accompanied by sparkling aleatoric woodwinds. The Apollo 8 spacecraft crests the moon's horizon and planet Earth is visible in the vastness of space. Earthrise is correlated with Tradition of Excellence Book 2, page 34.
About Tradition of Excellence: Excellence in Performance

The first time I saw an alpenglow, I had no idea what it was. It was the late 1980s, and I was at a music camp at the base of theRocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. A few of us got up in the middle of the night so we could hike to a vantage pointat the foot of Longs Peak, to watch the sun rise without any trees obstructing our view. Even though we had a few moreminutes to go before the sun breached the horizon, when I looked up at the face of Longs Peak, it was glowing intensely with amost beautiful peach-pink color. This enchanting vision lasted only about ten minutes, after which the color faded as the sunrose. Throughout the next thirty years, whenever I returned to the Rocky Mountain National Park, I would occasionally catchthis pre-dawn light show in all its glory. An alpenglow is an optical phenomenon that is visible on high altitude mountains. It happens twice daily, right before the sunrises and right after it sets. The earth’s atmosphere scatters the sun’s light, allowing particular wavelengths of light through andblanketing the mountains in rich hues of peach, pink, red, and purple.Alpenglow opens with First Light. This movement begins in the pre-dawn hour. The music starts simply and slowly, thengrows increasingly animated as the sky lightens and the horizon shimmers with color. The movement explodes in a massiveflurry of activity when the sun crosses the horizon; this energy eventually fades as the sun rises in the sky. In Arc of the Sun,we follow the sun as it energetically leaps and surges upwards in the sky. The music moves steadily upwards as it keeps pacewith the sun’s progress, then crests as the sun reaches its zenith. As the sun bends back down towards the earth, the musicfollows suit, getting lower in range and slower as the sun nears the horizon. In Radiant Glow, the sun slips under the horizon, giving way to a most radiant alpenglow. As the alpenglow fades and twilight envelops the earth, stars shimmer in the nightsky.-S.G.

Inspired by the beautiful landscapes the composer has seen on long road trips across the U.S., this powerful original features the pandiatonic harmonies and open-sounding intervals (fourths and fifths) that are reminiscent of the music of Aaron Copland, making it sound very American from start to finish. It portrays that moment when darkness gives way to light on the distant horizon, starting with a glimmer and eventually bursting into a brilliant sky to mark the start of a new day. Duration 3:40 .
