The third facsimile collection to be published by Early English Church Music, Volume 57 attests to the quality and depth of the polyphonic traditions during the long reigns of Henry III and his son Edward I, when the music of English high culture achieved a technical autonomy from the common international Anglo-French repertoire of the period. Assembling within the covers of one publication a set of facsimiles of the extant remains of native origin, it comprises images of more than sixty sources of thirteenth-century polyphony, including the Reading rota, the conductus-rondellus Flos regalis, and the Worcester fragments, here reunited from three codices. The large page layout adopted enables almost all the manuscripts to be reproduced at full size for direct comparison of different sources, layouts and dimensions.

From the foreword by John D. Witvliet, Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Since the publication of the first volume of Readings in African American Church Music and Worship, public and academic interest in the music and worship in black churches has significantly increased. William Croft's career as the leading native-born composer of English church music was established in the period between the death of Purcell and the arrival of Handel in London. His education took place among musicians from Purcell's circle, and his style was modified by the influence of Handel's 'Utrecht' Te Deum and Jubilate of 1713. All the music in this volume was composed for various royal church services that took place between 1709 and 1720, in the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace and in St Paul's Cathedral. The contents include the Te Deum and Jubilate Deo, sung at the coronation of George I, and the anthems The Lord is a sun and a shield, O give thanks unto the Lord, and call upon his name, O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious, and Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. Performing material is available for rental.

The Complete Vocal Works Johann Pachelbel is known today as a composer of organ music and of a world-famous instrumental canon which frequently features in concert programmes and recording catalogues. However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbel’s arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbel’s manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbel’s surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut für Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversität Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. Fragments and works where Johann Pachelbel’s authorship is doubtful appear at the end of the respective group. Each volume includes an introduction (Ger/Eng) and a Critical Commentary (Ger). Format 25.5 x 32.5 cm; cloth-bound

Tallis's choral works with English texts were all written for the worship of God in the reformed Church of England, setting either the liturgy of the new Book of Common Prayer of 1549, or Coverdale's vernacular bible. They testify to his position, undisputed even in his lifetime, as 'the father of English church music'. This volume contains ten of the 11 anthems that can definitely be attributed to the composer, and five contrafacta anthems with Latin texts, which were published in Tallis and Byrd's Cantiones Sacrae of 1575.

This collection, similarly to the publication entitled 111 bicinia from the 15th century (EMB 14478), contains longer and shorter two-part excerpts from polyphonic ecclesiastical choral works, for pedagogical and liturgical use. As teaching material, on the one hand it introduces and notes in brief textual definitions the characteristics of each given excerpt: on the other hand, it provides easily usable examples for teaching music history, solfege and counterpoint (practice of intervals, score-reading, dictation, stylistic exercises, etc.) At the same time the movements, which also function as independent units, can be quickly learnt, and may on occasions add colour to themusical palette of the liturgy by introducing material that can be performed even by a children's choir. The volume consists mainly of excerpts taken from Mass movements and Magnificats by Palestrina, Lassus, Gombert, Clemens non Papa and others. A separate chapter is devoted to chorale-based bicinia in German, which were already popular in the initial period of Evangelical church music.

The composition of Anglican church music was never one of Byrd's priorities, but his anthems on English texts remained in favour long after his death, and for two centuries were the works by which his name was remembered. Full and verse anthems are included in this volume, with anthems from secular sources and fragmentary and doubtful works also collected.

Since The Great Service was rediscovered in manuscripts at Durham, it has come to be recognised not only as Byrd's most important work for the Anglican church, but also as one of the masterpieces of Elizabethan art. In the hope of recapturing the composer's intentions as nearly as possible, the present edition follows the scoring of pre-Restoration sources more precisely than did either Fellowes or Tudor Church Music, and restores the parts that have subsequently come to light.

There are particular problems of establishing authentic sources for much of Tye's music. Nonetheless, its high quality places him, with Taverner and Tallis, at the forefront of English 16th-century church music. This first volume of his work contains 15 full anthems, evening canticles, and his famous setting of texts from The Acts of the Apostles, dedicated to Edward VI.

This volume contains short two-part extracts from choral church music of the 15th century (masses and motets), arranged in ascending order of difficulty. The principal aim of this compilation was pedagogical: to provide students with fairly easy etudes of the period, through which they can later gain access to the large-scale, four-part compositions of Renaissance vocal polyphony, which at first sight generally seem very difficult and complex. At the same time, many of these pieces of varying length, each of which forms a complete unit in itself, are very suitable for public performance, and for use in a liturgical framework.

Spanning the years 1663-1674, Humfrey's output provides a most significant legacy from the Restoration period. The 12 verse anthems in this volume show the evolution of a distinctively English baroque style through a mixture of continental influences. String parts for 'Have mercy upon me O God' and 'Lift up your heads' are available through the Made-to-Order Service.

The Dettinger Te Deum was written to celebrate England's victory over the French at the Battle of Dettingen. It is Handel's last and most successful setting of the Te Deum and reveals a deep understanding of the English church music tradition. The sound impact of this broadly conceived work is governed by the choirs in an almost theatrical exegesis of the text. Particularly striking are several borrowings from the Messiah which Handel had just completed. This edition, edited by Baroque specialist Amanda Babington, is based on the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition.* First Urtext edition* Includes a Foreword (Eng/Ger).
