While many electric bassists study the Bach cello suites at some point, few attempt the sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin BWV 1001-1006 . Composed around 1720, the sonatas and partitas display rich polyphonic writing, unlike the simpler monophonic cello suites. This collection features a challenging but rewarding transcription of the complete A minor Violin Sonata BWV 1002 , which fits particularly well on the bass. Also included are the well-known gavotte en rondeau from the E major violin partita BWV1006 and the complete A minor partita for solo flute BWV 1013 , transposed here to D minor. Finally, an arrangement of the familiar chorale Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring from BWV 147 takes advantage of the basss natural and artificial harmonics. Performance notes are included. Written in notation and tablature for the 4-string electric bass.

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Septet is the first major work written for this combination of instruments, and the pioneering process was greatly enjoyed by the composer: “While the instrumentation of the Septet provides an almost orchestral palette, and it was interesting to explore that, I love the idea of seven artist-performers, each of whom can be a stunning virtuoso one moment and a thoughtful partner the next, and I relish the electricity that results from those shifting roles.†Septet was written for the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio and the Miami String Quartet, to whom it is dedicated. String parts available on rental. For advanced ensembles. Duration: 24’.Writing music is a labor of love for me. My greatest joy is writing for performers whom I can be sure will not only deliver the notes accurately, but will project the meaning behind the notes. To have performers in the wings who will bring their own imagination and deep understanding to a performance is an inspiration to me. So I approached the writing of my Septet for the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio and the Miami String Quartet with great anticipation and pleasure. The fact that there is no model for such a Septet made the pre-composition process a most enjoyable exploration. I liked the idea of having two strong ensemble personalities in the mix, and I thought that there must be some sort of challenging interchange at the outset. The first movement, “Introductions,†(note the plural) starts with the piano trio throwing down the gauntlet and the string quartet entering quietly, but gradually (almost one by one) joining with the trio to make a true septet with multi-faceted relations. The second movement, “Quasi una Passacaglia,†is based on a repeated phrase pattern. Part of the formal design is a contrast between “Baroque†style performance and modern, more romantic ways of playing. “Games,†the third movement, involves much playful interplay and the fourth movement, “Au revoir,†offers both reminiscence and farewell – not “good-bye,†but “until we meet again.â€Throughout the piece, two of my persistent fascinations are explored: firstly, my interest in designing initial material that can evolve into large-scale form, and secondly, the pleasure I take in chamber music. While the instrumentation of the Septet provides an almost orchestral palette and it was interesting to explore that, I love the idea of 7 artist-performers, each of whom can be a stunning virtuoso one moment and a thoughtful partner the next, and I relish the electricity that results form those shifting roles.

In a musical style strongly influenced by (and occasionally parodying) American popular music, the subtitle “Baroque†may seem a puzzle at first. It is also the key to Pann’s approach in composing for multiple wind soloists and ensemble. With Bach’s Brandenburgs in the rear-view mirror, Pann has created a glorious hybrid of inspirations with intricate counterpoint, cadenzas, beautiful slow textures, and wild rides, creating a 16-minute, fast-slow-fast concerto grosso. The published piano reduction is fully practical for live performance. My Double Concerto (subtitled “Baroqueâ€) from 2018 posed an immediate challenge which gave me some real trepidation as a composer. The two solo instruments, Clarinet and Alto Saxophone, are quite varied in their timbral characteristics yet they have nearly identical ranges. I gave many hours of thought to solving this challenge and eventually settled on an obvious mission: make each instrument as independent from the other as possible. Explore opposite areas of each range simultaneously. Set very different contours against one another in the solo parts. These kinds of things.I. Bach in the Fifties sets the soloists up as competing crooners. I wanted to write a 1950s-style teen idol tune, complete with electric organ, and writing the music I imagined J.S. Bach might tend towards if he was writing for The Platters or Perry Como. This first movement also presents within it a traditional concerto-style cadenza for both soloists together.II. Desert Arias should transport the listener to an arid, barren land over which a mirage of canons emerge.III. Pronouncements is set in the style of a baroque concerto’s final movement. Nuance is forfeited on behalf of straight-ahead melodic dueling. Stravinsky lingers like a ghost behind this finale.

The Baroque is a period of frills and ornaments, wether in architecture, painting or music. An easy melody passes through a variety of arrangements. From brass quintet and different tutti parts, all the sections are in action. Fortified by a drum set and an (optional) electric bass, the piece is given a modern touch and becomes more acceptable to the audience. A follow-up to Rondo Romantica, this piece was composed in December 1997.

This inventive and stunning composition is a modernized version of the original concerto grosso dating back to the Baroque era. Written for soloists on electric instruments, it is also possible to do acoustically. An ideal way to feature guest soloists, faculty members or talented students, the music explores a wide range of styles. At times, the piece sounds like Stravinsky. At other times, with the use of distortion pedals, the audience will feel like they are at a heavy metal concert (of course, backed by an orchestra!). Incredibly unique, and guaranteed to bring down the house!
