This major work by one of Britain's leading choral composers was commissioned by St Mary's Cathedral Edinburgh. Jackson's only mass to date the setting is terse and direct in the manner of the Poulenc Mass and the textures often unusually pared-down. By turns fiery and exuberant and inward and numinous the music includes a huge variety of textures and techniques including flower melismas luminous key changes and pure homophony. David Bednall's Pure Living Light for SATB and Organ. This radiant anthem explores the theme of light with luminescent harmonies a virtuosic Organ part and soaring Vocal lines. The text is by Dr Marcus Tomalin after Dante's Paradiso and Bednall's word painting is highly effective. A compelling climax as the singers tell of the 'pure living light shining' falls away to a powerful unaccompanied moment before the organ picks up a motif and develops it in a majestic interlude.
