Strauss had originally intended that Don Quixotealways be performed, if possible, together with Heldenleben, since Don Q. in particular is only fully comprehensible alongside Heldenleben. To date, Strauss's wish is rarely respected. The Don Quixote Urtext edition now being published by Breitkopf & Hartel can assist here. Once again, the new edition is based on Strauss's own engraver's model, helping to clarify numerous misunderstandings, and facilitating the correction of dozens of traditional errors. Furthermore, the woodwind parts, previously available only in manuscript form, are now appearing completely engraved for the first time. This new edition is also being augmented by a piano reduction of the most important orchestral passages for facilitating the study of the solo cello and viola parts; these two solo parts are also separately included with the purchase of the piano reduction.First Urtext edition since the original edition; Evaluation of all available manuscript and printed sources; Detailed preface giving the genesis and reception history; Detailed critical report; Facsimile pages.

This arrangement of the finale from the tone poem Don Quixote is aimed at very ambitious cellists, cello students and professionals. It is ideally suited as an encore at concerts with a cello ensemble or at recital evenings at conservatories. The first violoncello part is completely identical to the original solo part by Richard Strauss. Those who are currently rehearsing this work may well enjoy playing its finale with an ensemble.

This four-handed piano work was conceived as a kind of symphonic poem with a rhapsodical form. The structural balance comes out of the strong opposition between the assertively motorized passages and those with a euphoric lyricism. The programmatic discourse deals with the great Quixotic themes -madness, idealized love, the struggle between the individual and society, and death- interconnect not as a description of the facts of the novel, but rather as an attempt to sketch a portrait of the Knight of the Sad Countenance and his interior psychological conflict. The rhythmic element represents Quixote´s obstinate resistance and his heroic defence of his ideal when faced with the prosaic and mocking incomprehension of those around him. The melodic themes symbolize the retreat into oneself and the search for interior refuge. In keeping with the Germanic conception of Don Quixote which refused to accept his final, sad capitulation, I have, like Nietzsche and Thomas Mann, tried to give our hero´s story a victorious ending- one without knee-bending or lowering-of-the-gaze.

In considering the great characters of Cervantes' novel Don Quixote, Zyman has chosen flute, cello, and piano (three of his favorite instruments) to take us on the journey. Descriptive movements introduce Don Quixote, Pancho Sanza, Dulcinea, and the poor, exhausted horse Rocinante. The suite is infused with Sephardic and Middle East cues, as it considers the Spanish Golden Century. Suite de la Mancha was commissioned by flutist Marisa Canales, to commemorate the 400th anniversery of Certantes' death. Appropriately, the suite was premiered by Trio Boehm (Canales, flute, Patrick Jee, cello, and Moises Fernandez Via, piano) during the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato.
