Hip and cool doesn't have to take a lot of rehearsal time and hard work - at least not with this chart. The ranges are conservative and the rhythms are basic, but you'd never know it from the big and full sound. An open solo section for any instrument on very basic chord changes, plus lots of hard driving ensemble writing make this one a true winner.

This setting of The First Noel begins with a percussion intro and dissonant chords that lead to a beautiful flute duet. The melody is freely adapted and at times, outright changed, to give this arrangement a very different sound. Using rhythmic motives, tone clusters, altered melodies and all the sounds available for a concert band, the piece takes the audience on a journey that leads to a statement of the original tune at m. 118. Everyone gets the melody at some point. After a chorale-like section, the composition returns to the fast and upbeat sounds of the beginning. Your musicians and audience will love this unique version of this old-time favorite. When performing this piece, start dark and mysterious and let the sounds crescendo through the introduction all the way to m. 21, the first statement of the hymn. Make sure you keep the tempo moving so the arrangement does not lose excitement. Keep the flute duet, and later the trumpet duet, nice and light. At m. 118, play a little slower and in a standard chorale style, being careful to let the flute and oboe voices be heard. Let the low voices have the reins at m. 126 as they play the melody. Pick the tempo back up to the original tempo at m. 145 and push to the end. The main thing is to match articulation throughout the band--at the beginning and at the end, think light accents and separation, and at the chorale section at m. 118, more legato. Keeping everyone on the same page with articulation will be the key to making a great performance. This setting of The First Noel begins with a percussion intro and dissonant chords that lead to a beautiful flute duet. Here's a straight-ahead chart reminiscent of Miles Davis' modal playing and writing during the late 1950s. It takes the typical AABA form and compresses it, so the band won't be stranded on one chord for 16 to 24 measures. This, along with the focus on ensemble playing and the excellent suggestions in the IDEAS FOR IMPROV section of the score, makes Play It Cool an excellent vehicle to introduce this important style to your young ensemble. By the way, it does sound cool too!

Meet the up-and-coming Persia’s Traveling Band—or PTB, as their fans call them—who are out on “their biggest tour yet!†with their little “roadie†Abel. Along the way, they meet three Wise Men, who are following a star in search for a King who has just been born. With the possibility of playing for a Royal audience, PTB decides to join the Wise Men and make the journey to Bethlehem. After all, what better way for the band to be discovered and rise to the top the charts than playing for a King? During this fantastic journey, the little dude named Abel, who is sort of a ‘roadie’ for PTB, unveils his passion for playing the drums. While the band does not take his playing seriously, the Wise Men notice his talent and encourage his efforts, knowing that he has a very special gift. One of the Wise Men expresses to Abel that perhaps he might even get to play his drum for the King…Will Abel get his wish?? To learn the outcome—and finally get to meet this King to be born in Bethlehem—you’ll have to come along on the journey with Abel, Persia’s Traveling Band, the three Wise Men, and Abel’s fantastically whacky and fun camel, Hakim! Through The Little Drummer Dude, each and every kid in your children’s ministry will learn that God can do amazing things through everyone, even if they are “just a little dude.†Set Pieces
