Cette pièce pour flûte seule fut composée en 1913, et publiée par les éditions Jobert en 1927, soit près de dix ans après la mort de Claude Debussy. A l'origine elle était intitulée Flûte de Pan et servait de musique de scène à un spectacle théâtral, Psyché , de Gabriel Mourey. Le titre Syrinx vient du nom d'une nymphe aimée du dieu Pan qui la fit périr en la poursuivant et qui, après qu'elle fut métamorphosée en roseau, imagina et confectionna, à partir des tiges du roseau, l'instrument qui porte son nom. Dans l'oeuvre du compositeur, ce lamento funèbre est à rapprocher des nombreuses oeuvres hantées par des faunes ( Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Fêtes galantes, thème du pâtre de La Boîte à joujoux , et Pour invoquer Pan , des Epigraphes antiques ). Solo Bass Clarinet-Claude Debussy's Syrinx for Bass Clarinet. Despite being written originally for Flute this transcription of Syrinx by Helen Paskins works beautifully for the Bass Clarinet; the timbre of theinstrument really resonates with the haunting melancholy of the melody. 'Syrinx was written in 1913 by Debussy for the flute as incidental music to Gabriel Mourey's play Psyché. It was first performed by anddedicated to Louis Fleury. It has become a staple of the flute repertoire and subsequently of the solo classical saxophone repertoire too. It works beautifully on the bass clarinet; the timbre of the instrument really resonateswith the haunting melancholy of the melody.  The story of Syrinx is from classical mythology and has inspired many wonderful works of art literature and music. It tells of a beautiful and chaste nymph who istransformed into water reeds that sing sweetly in the breeze as she attempts to escape the amorous advances of the Greek God Pan. Pan on hearing the enchanting melody of the reeds cuts them down to make pan pipes therebyunwittingly killing his love but keeping her with him forever.  For flautists Syrinx and the French flute tradition have played an important role in inspiring players to find and explore the full palette ofethereal and evocative tone colours. The subtle flexibility with which it is possible to craft the sound is a feature of wonderful flute playing today and from which I feel there is much we bass clarinettists can learn.' -Helen Paskins 2015 

La musique de Debussy est une musique de la résonance. Chaque son semble vouloir se prolonger à l'infini dans l'espace de nos mémoires.C'est le cas dans les oeuvres pour piano et pour orchestre, mais dans Syrinx aussi, pour flûte seule (1913). La flûte du Dieu Pan fait écho ici - à vingt ans d'intervalle - à celle du faune. Si dans le Prélude à ' L'après-midi d'un faune ' (1892-94), le solo initial de flûte est continuée par l'orchestre qui l'amplifie en mille chatoiements harmonieux, dans Syrinx, la flûte se joue seule d'elle-même, en son propre écho.C'est pourquoi, j'ai voulu la prolonger en miroir par son reflet double. Deux autres flûtes viennent matérialiser ici les résonances implicites de l'oeuvre originale.Les flutistes qui ont joué Syrinx auront plaisir à en jouer une version à trois ou chacun se sent démultiplié - ' mis en résonance ' - par les deux autres. / 3 Flûtes
