Le profil des thèmes et les modulations évoquent fortement Gabriel Fauré, mais Debussy ajoute une touche très personnelle avec un traitement chromatique des voix et le mètre insolite en 7/4 dans la partie centrale. On ignore tout de la genèse de cette uvre. Toutefois le contrat d édition de 1892 révèle que le compositeur l avait intitulée à l origine «Interlude», avant de se décider pour l appellation bien plus appropriée de «Nocturne». Il compte aujourd hui parmi les uvres pour piano les plus appréciées de Debussy et se trouve désormais disponible sous forme d édition Henle-Urtext séparée.
