The cakewalk is a dance that was popular in the late nineteenth-century and indicative of the ragtime style, which was the precursor to Jazz. This piece contains the well-known cakewalk rhythm as the basis of all of the melodic and accompanying material. In typical Carl Strommen fashion, the piece is tuneful, well-scored and fun!.The “Cakewalkâ€, also known as the “Walkaround†or “Prize Walks,†was a late nineteenth-century Southern dance form set to the infectious, even eighth-note pulse of Ragtime. A partner dance, judges would evaluate the elegant bearing of the men, the gracefulness of the women and the inventiveness of the pair of dancers. The last remaining pair (“winnersâ€) would often be presented with an elaborately decorated cake.Devoted exclusively to the sixth grade, the Silas Wood school is named after Silas Wood (1769–1847), who was elected to the United State Congress for five terms representing the Long island, New York district within Suffolk County and the Town of Huntington.

Debussy commence à composer en 1906 ce petit recueil plein de féérie, une dédicace à sa fille Claude-Emma, plus connue sous le surnom de Chouchou, en 1908. C'est cette même année que le recueil est publié chez les éditions Durand, avec une couverture originale et plaisante faite par le compositeur lui-même. La première écoute officielle est créée au Cercle Musical à Paris le 18 décembre 1908 par Harold Bauer. Quelques années plus tard, Children's Corner est retranscrit pour orchestre par le compositeur André Caplet. Son audition est conduite par Debussy lui-même le 25 mars 1911. Bien que ces six petites suites soient dédicacées à sa fille avec les mots suivants : « A ma très chère petite Chouchou, avec les tendres excuses de son père pour ce qui va suivre », elles ne s'adressent pas à des mains d'enfants. Elle représente l'apothéose finale de ce recueil. Il faut noter que le terme Cake-Wake correspond à une danse noire américaine et le mot Golliwogg représente une poupée de nègre en étoffe.Debussy emprunte pour la première fois la musique jazz pour exprimer la danse des gestes articulés et saccadés de cette poupée nègre. Au milieu du Cake-Walk, il cite à demi-ironique les premières mesures de Tristan de Wagner en indiquant une annotation piquante : « avec une grande émotion »! puis reprend une deuxième citation dans l'accord final.Grà ce à cette pièce pleines d'effets musicaux et de contre temps rythmiques, le pianiste interprète développera un touché nuancé, de la sensibilité et de l'imagination dans l'éxécution pour faire vivre une oeuvre sautillante très originale.

The famous Golliwogg's Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Childrens Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908. The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dance which was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. The present arrangement now allows musicians to play the popular movement in a version for melodic instrument with accompaniment.

The Dance Suite for alto saxophone and piano is an arrangement of selected pieces from Matyas Seiber's Easy Dances, originally composed as piano pieces on the popular dance-styles of the 1920s and 30s and focusing particularly on the rhythmic characteristics of each. After completing his studies with Zoltan Kodaly, the Hungarian composer Mathias Seiber (1905-1960) first worked as a musician in a dance orchestra on an ocean liner which gave him the opportunity to listen to jazz music in New York. From 1928 he taught the first jazz class worldwide at Dr. Koch's Conservatoire in Frankfurt. In the winter term of 1928/29, 19 students had registered with whom he gave a public concert on 3 March 1929 which was broadcast by Radio Frankfurt. After the Nazis had seized power, the jazz class was dissolved, Seiber lost his job and emigrated to London.In 1932 he wrote his piano cycle 'Leichte Tanze' (Easy Dances), one of the early examples of the adoption of jazz forms and styles in so-called serious music. The present arrangement for orchestra is easily playable and is aimed at youth and amateur orchestras. Instrumentation: 2 flutes, clarinet, oboe (ad lib.), alto saxophone, trumpet, bassoon and strings. Movements: Cake Walk - Novelty Foxtrot - Gipsy Tango - Waltz - Walzer - Blues - Charleston.
