The Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona (1896-1963) wrote many works labelled as Afro-Cuban, and sorting them all can be difficult. While some are lost and others are scattered about, the 1930 piano suite titled Danzas Afro-Cubanas, a collection of six of the dances, remains a core group in the style. La Comparsa (Carnival Procession) is the sixth dance in the suite, and it is based on the traditional parade and ceremony that occurs during Carnival season in Cuba. This composition starts with the gradual approach of the procession and carries one through all the excitement until the last faint notes of the departing parade die away in the distance. This version for full orchestra has been arranged by Morton Gould (1913-1996). Instrumentation: 2.2.3+BCl.2: 3Sax(AAT; opt.): 2.3.3.1: Perc(1-2): Hp.Clst.Gtr: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Pno Cond Score in set.

Cecilia Valdes is a Cuban Zarzuela based on the novel by Cirilo Villaverde. It is a work of importance for its quality, and its revelation of the interaction of classes and races in Havana, Cuba. The story takes place in colonial Cuba around 1830. The young and beautiful woman of mixed-race, Cecilia Valdés, is the illegitimate daughter of powerful land magnate and slave trader, Cándido de Gamboa. Leonardo de Gamboa is his legitimate son. Leonardo falls in love with Cecilia, not realizing that she is his own half-sister, and they become lovers. At the same time, a poor black musician, José Dolores Pimienta, is also hopelessly in love with Cecilia. Cecilia rejects Pimenta's advances and conceives Leonardo's son. However, love between Leonardo and Cecilia does not last. He abandons her and becomes betrothed to a white upper class woman, Isabel Ilincheta. Cecilia turns to the faithful Pimienta to plan revenge. On the day of his wedding, Leonardo is assassinated on the steps of the cathedral by Pimienta who acts on the instigation of Cecilia. Pimienta is executed, and she is thrown in prison. This edition has been arranged by Evan Hause.

From the music of the Buena Vista Social Club to Gloria Estefan, the lyrical melodies and infectious rhythms of Cuban music have become embedded in U.S. culture. With Caminemos con Jesús / Let Us Walk with Jesus, composer Tony Alonso presents a groundbreaking collection of liturgical music that calls on his own Cuban musical heritage to provide new ways of singing the liturgy in Spanish, English or bilingually. The first project of its kind, Caminemos con Jesús not only utilizes rich Cuban idioms but also explores what style and musical form can teach us about praying together across cultural and linguistic boundaries. The dynamic call-and-response form that is a hallmark of traditional Cuban music makes these songs especially compelling choices for bilingual worship, allowing assemblies to learn, internalize, and pray easily in both Spanish and English. “Qué AlegrÃa Cuando Me Dijeron / I Rejoiced When I Heard Them Say†uses the words of the psalm as a rhythmic mantra, creating a fresh and engaging way to gather as the Body of Christ. “LetanÃa a la Madre de las Américas / Litany of Mary of The Americas,†invokes the Mary of many names and nations with a simple yet strong response that will enliven Marian feasts throughout the year. The gentle simplicity of “Tres Guajiros / Three Peasants†re-imagines the story of the Magi as humble peasants bringing gifts of the land to honor the newborn Jesus. Also, in this collection and for the first time in published form, is Gloria Estefan’s “Caridad,†a powerful and poetic prayer to Our Lady of Charity, the patroness of Cuba. All of the pieces of this collection focus on the importance of bringing the voices of the assembly to the forefront while the arrangements are skillfully crafted to be accessible to musicians of all abilities. In addition to the spiral-bound edition, individual octavos, and flute and brass parts, Caminemos con Jesús offers a special edition featuring parts for guitar, percussion and other instruments central to Cuban music. The studio recording is a stunning source of prayer and inspiration, produced in Miami by Grammy Award winner Juan Delgado and featuring some of the finest Cuban-American musicians today. GIA Publications, Inc. is committed to responding to the rich diversity of the contemporary Church. With Caminemos con Jesús, we offer you our very best bilingual music for the liturgical year. “The music of my father’s Cuban homeland has been the language of my heart for as long as I can remember. These songs infuse that rich tradition with the unique sabor of my own experience as a Cuban-American in a distinctly liturgical shape that I hope will inspire others in their daily camino con Jesús.†–Tony Alonso Featuring “Live Mercy, Be Holy / Vive la Misericordia, Vive la Santidad,†the 2020 Los Angeles Religious Education Congress theme song! This harmonic system complementary to traditional harmony aims at making the contemporary harmonic language effortlessly accessible to everyone interested. Unlike other harmonic systems or treatises on the same subject, the harmonic system proposed by Orlando Sánchez Cubajazz is made up of chords formed on the basis of one note (bass) plus a perfect major chord. Founded on this extraordinarily simple concept, not only the modes of occidental music---major and minor---can be determined but also seventh chord substitutions, other kinds of chord substitutions as well as inversions of perfect major chords. The harmonic system introduced in this book suggests a new theoretical as well as practical approach to this topic, offering an easily comprehensible system that provides straightforward and practical solutions. A valuable cultural exchange at a global level promotes cultural growth and development; mutual influences are inevitable. The author feels that jazz---on a world scale---represents popular music at its maximum expression; and for Cuba and artists such as Orlando Sánchez himself it does carry very special connotations. Deux Airs populaires cubains (Dos aires populares cubanos) and Deux Thèmes populaires cubains (Dos temas populares cubanos) were written in the 1960s and published by Ãditions Max Eschig in 1972 and 1978. These two pieces belong to the genre of arrangements of popular songs for solo instruments that was a widespread presence in the plucked-string repertoire from the sixteenth century on. In these two cycles, Leo Brouwer reworks Cuban popular music with his usual instrumental originality. In the first cycle, Brouwer did not alter any of the melodic or structural elements of the original songs, only embellishing these with introductions, harmony, and some structure. In the second cycle however, the original dance was composed by Brouwer himself, imitating Cuban popular music characterised by both Spanish and African influences. Rather than being based on actual folk repertoire, it draws its inspiration from it and attempts to recreate its sonic ambiance. Zigante interventions, made on the scores published during the 1970s, consist of the correction of a few errors and restoring some of the original repeat signs as conceived by Brouwer. Any fingering indicationswere added by Leo Brouwer himself.
