Coronation March

The Gloria in Excelsis was written by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford for the coronation of HM King George V on 22 June 1911. It was an occasion of some note in the annals of British music for Elgar?s Coronation March and Parry?s grand festival Te Deum were also heard for the first time that day. In addition there was music by Thomas Tallis Orlando Gibbons and Sir John Stainer as well as by the Master of the King?s Music and organist of St George?s Chapel Windsor Sir Walter Parratt. It was published the following year as part of Stanford?s Opus 128 the Festal Communion Service for voices and orchestra which was also made available withthe accompaniment arranged by the composer for organ. However such was the popularity of the Gloria a magnificent and wholly representative example of Stanford?s genius for church music that it soon became popular as a separate piece either with organ or orchestral accompaniment and it was included in the orders of service for the coronations of HM King George VI on 12 May 1937 and HM Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953.

Ses œuvres ont fait de lui, le compositeur le plus joué dans les plus grandes maisons d'opéra du monde au XIXe siècle. Giacomo Meyerbeer composa son opéra Le Prophète en 1849. Dans cet opéra un couronnement est précédé d'une splendide marche. Bien que l'opéra lui-même soit rarement joué, la Marche du couronnement a une place importante dans le répertoire des concerts. Coronation March is in ABA form with just a tip of the hat to William Walton's famous coronation marches written for British monarchs of the 20th century. Kingsfold is a lovely setting of the modal English traditional tune set to the text O Sing a Song of Bethlehem featuring solos for flute and trumpet with chamber music textures. Variations on a 'Green' Theme begins with a jig in the percussion and reeds before slowly revealing the identity of the theme being varied - Greensleeves. A tour de force for advanced middle school bands or small high school bands.

De la mélodie du trio Elgar devait déclarer qu?elle était de celles dont on n?a l?inspiration « qu?une fois dans sa vie ». Il réutilisera cette mélodie dans son oeuvre chorale Coronation Ode (1902) pour accompagner le texte Land of Hope and Glory d?A.C. Benson. Depuis Land of Hope and Glory est devenu une sorte de second hymne national anglais et fait partie intégrante de la célébrissime Dernière Nuit des Concerts-promenades (the Last Night of the Proms).

Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war! It is these words from Shakespeare's Othello that these works by the English composer Sir Edward Elgar fall back on. The work was a sensational success from the very beginning, especially March #1. At its premiere in 1901 under the composer's direction, the audience requested two repeats - in 1902 the words of 'Land of Hope and Glory' were added to the march at the request of Edward VII for his coronation ceremonial. The resulting version is now performed every year at the Last Night of the Proms. Motivated by the success of the first two marches, Elgar composed another three which were performed in 1905, 1907 and 1930. #4 is as formal as #1 whereas the others are of a rather melancholy nature. / Orchestre
