This late work by Michael Praetorius is characterized by a combination of the new Italian style with the Protestant chorale. The Puericinium, which appeared in 1621, the year of Praetorius' death, has a music-pedagogical component. Four children's voices (who would have been boys in Praetorius' time), ideally spread around the four corners of the church, sing the chorale line by line in turn, interrupted and ended with tutti passages in which an adult choir joins. The whole piece is accompanied by basso continuo and a four-part instrumental ensemble ad lib. The magnificent Komm heiliger Geist, Herre Gott is still suitable for performance by a children's choir and adult choir today; although adult sopranos would not have sung in church choirs in Praetorius' time, they can join in the melody line in the tutti passages. Songs from Across the Water was commissioned by Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds - Phil Evans, Founder and Director. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Windsin 2008, giving them the tag line An American Band with a British Accent , as he wanted to combine the best of both countries bandtraditions. With this in mind, composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs, scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band s tag line. The three movements, which are played without a break, are based on the following folk songs, which come from all corners of the British Isles: The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn, The Lark in the ClearAir and The Piper o Dundee & Men of Harlech.

Rudolf Mauersberger, the cantor of the Dresden Kreuzkirche, shaped his Christvesper in the Christmas tradition of the Erzgebirge in Saxony. The work underwent a long period of gestation and first attained its final form in 1963. The entire church is used for a performance: On the altar the Christmas story from Luke is presented, in four different corners of the church the Quempas or responsorial singing between congregation and cantor takes place, and in the gallery Die Weissagung or Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe are sung; in addition the chorales and songs are performed by a separate group of instruments. Thus the Christvesper, this impressive choral work which is still in the realm of tonality, provides a new accent in the well-known Christmas repertoire.
