For cello and piano. “This work was the result of a collaboration with my wonderful friend, the outstanding cellist Julius Berger. Several years ago, his exceptional interpretation of my Concerto for violin and violoncello impressed me deeply. Later, when he played my 2nd Sonata for violoncello solo, a work written for him, my enthusiasm became even greater. In my new piece, composed on the occasion of his 60th birthday, I intended to write kind of music in which not only virtuosity but also a beautiful sound should stand at the forefront. Above all, however, I wanted to please Julius with it and also give enjoyment to the audience. The title 'three times four' describes the basic idea of the work: three musical characters are varied in four different respective forms. Or put the other way round: four characteristic sound designs appear in three different shapes. It is difficult to say more about the piece than that. My ideal is music that is sufficient unto itself, a kind of music that requires no commentary - that itself says so much that all commentary becomes superfluous.†(Krzysztof Meyer).

This short, metaphorical work captures the moment when a person casts a summative glance over the past, takes final leave of all that has happened and peers with cautious hope into the future, which will perhaps be better than the time now being left behind. This minimalist tribute was composed for the fortieth birthday of the painter Hans Nopper, even though it makes use of extremely restricted resources, it bears within it the possibility of catharsis. Adler's ninth turn at string quartet composition was written for the Esterhazy Quartet, who were pleased to perform the world premiere in April, 2009 with the composer in attendance. Violinist Susan Jensen described the work as energetic, spirited, humorous and celebratory. The premiere follows an all-Adler 80th birthday celebration by the Esterhazy in the previous year, so this new String Quartet No. 9 is a treat. Three of the four movements proceed at a fast pace, and the Quartet is for advanced performers.

Begun in 1999, the work, which is Kurtág s fourth string quartet, had been completed in 2005. In this suite of 6 movements Kurtág reuses music from other compositions, most often from his long-running Játékok for piano. 6 Moments musicaux was dedicated to György Kurtág junior, the first entire performance of the work took place by the Keller Quartet in February 2006 during the five-day 80th birthday celebration for Kurtág in Bordeaux.

Composed for the 90th birthday of Gyorgy Kurtag, the only five-minute trio is characterized by a condensed, contemporary spirit of playing. The change between piccolo and alto flute, magical sound surfaces of the piano and the scordatura of the cello again and again lead to new combinations. The piece concludes, with a wink, with a gradual downward move in quarter-tone steps on the low string of the cello to the Contra G, the initial of the composer celebrating his birthday.

Although my wife Elizabeth took me on a two-week Caribbean cruise as a pre-70th birthday vacation gift, two short works for string instruments emerged during the trip: Trance for solo violoncello and Sojournen for solo viola. This cello piece invokes two of the many meanings of spell: an incantation and also a short period of time. The solo is a trance-like, fleeting scherzo in a three-part through-composed design. The entire piece is constructed from very limited material stated in the opening gestures with much use made of open strings. Following an introduction, the three brief sections serve as mini-etudes for glissandi tremolandos, measured tremolos, and double-stopped rapid bowing. I think an omnipresent autumnal aural breeze was in my mind since the soloist's oration -- indeed under a spell -- never lets up, even at very low dynamic levels. This constant motion requires dexterity, finesse and an elegant control from the performer. Trance is approximately five minutes in duration, was written while at sea and completed on December 15, 2003, in Saint Johns, Antigua. The score is dedicated to the American cellist Jeffrey Zeigler.
