Concerto for Percussion Ensemble

Kevin Volans’ Concerto for Solo Percussion and Ensemble was commissioned by KammerensembleN Stockholm with funding from the Arts Council of Ireland. The world premiere took place in Stockholm in_x0005__x0006__x0007__x0005__x0008_2013.

Standard US Set (without european suppl. parts)-Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band this three movement work by Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. A note from thecomposer: 'Divided into three movements this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement the Brass section concertises in groupsof four Brass quintets (2 Trumpets Horn Trombone and Tuba or Baritone) spread from left to right in back. The Saxophones (SATB) are placed in front of the Brass quintets and the Woodwinds occupy the front of the stage withPercussion on the left and right side. These groups like the Brass quintets play in the concertante style particularly in the first and last movements. 'At the same time each movement contains individual solo passages(for example Timpani and Flute in Movement I - Drum Ceremony and English Horn and other low Woodwinds in Movement II - Elegy). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of Wind and Percussion players today andby the incredible growth of Wind ensembles orchestras and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.'

Après avoir écrit ?Points d'orientation? (pour xylophone, multi- percussions et piano fin de cycle 1), ?Lock- it? (Concerto pour vibraphone, marimba, timbales et batterie) propose un tour d'horizon des bases instrumentales et musicales demandées en fin de cycle 2. La batterie est utilisée comme dans une une formation de jazz avec des patterns d'accompagnement mais aussi un grand solo écrit. Les timbales mélodiques solliciteront l'interprète sur la justesse dans le pédalage. L'introduction au vibraphone propose une mélodie très simple qui requiert beaucoup de phrasé et de maîtrise dans l'utilisation de la pédale. Enfin, le marimba fera appel à l'indépendance des 4 baguettes dans un ragtime qui va s'enflammer pour finir en variations à 2 baguettes. Dramaphonia for Piano solo and Chamber Ensemble was composed by Poul Ruders in 1987. First part of 'Drama Trilogy'. Commissioned by and dedicated to Poul Rosenbaum and Lontano. Programme note: 'Dramaphonia' for Piano solo and 11 instruments forms the first part of a trilogy of solo-concertos the remaining two being one for percussion and smaller symphony orchestra ('Monodrama') and the last ('Polydrama') for violoncello and full orchestra. All three pieces are in one movement each and may be performed together thus presenting a vast 'concerto grosso' of the duration of ninety minutes. Each concerto however standsby itself offering its own story: having employed the word 'drama' in all three pieces I naturally want to imply that something is 'going on' a series of hidden events created by each listener’s own 'inner theatre' which enables him to stage his own personal associations and in the case of 'Dramaphonia' the compositorical tension alters between action and frozen panoramas. In the percussion concerto the rhythmical progression is being constantly intensified whereas the metric proportions of Dramaphonia tighten and loosen like a magnifying glass being wielded in and out of focus. Beethoven's fifth and final piano concerto is at the same time the culmination of his efforts in this genre and a reflection of all his artistic skill and expertise. The surviving manuscripts provide a clear insight into his working methods and his intentions regarding the work's performance.The editor, Jonathan Del Mar, has closely scrutinised the autograph solo piano part and reproduced Beethoven's sophisticated performance instructions for the first time in a modern edition. Cette oeuvre s'inscrit dans un groupe de pièces concertantes - les 4 variations pour percussion et ensemble (2000), Aura pour piano et orchestre ou ensemble (2002-2006), Phonus pour flûte et orchestre (2004). Dans ces différentes pièces, l'instrument soliste y est toujours traité comme faisant partie intégrante du groupe qui l'entoure, soit comme partie du 'concertino' avec les percussions de l'ensemble et le piano dans les 4 variations influencées par le concerto grosso, soit comme un corps sonore indissociable de son enveloppe orchestrale dans Aura, soit comme un instrument traité en temps réel grâce au deux flûtes de l'orchestre dans Phonus. Dans Phasis, c'est la métaphore acoustique du déphasage qui m'a guidé. La pièce étant composée avec un matériau reconnaissable - une enveloppe périodique variée sans cesse - les écritures décalées des différentes parties de l'ensemble par rapport au soliste, ou les unes par rapport aux autres sont comme des 'retards de phase' entre des ondes, entre des signaux sonores. A cela s'ajoute la perception des états successifs de mêmes 'situations musicales' sous un aspect différent, à l'instar des apparences des planètes qui se présentent à nos regards pendant la durée de leur révolution. Ici le titre de Phasis prend encore un autre sens, son sens étymologique qui fait référence à chacun des aspects successifs d'un même phénomène. Ainsi, les mêmes matériaux sont variés sans cesse et de façon récurrente : l'enveloppe mélodique dont j'ai déjà parlé - qui sert aussi à construire les parcours harmoniques du mouvement le plus lent - ainsi que les quelques multiphoniques de saxophone, analysés par ordinateur et resynthétisés par l'ensemble en différents endroits de la pièce, qui servent de bornes perceptives pour organiser la forme de l'oeuvre. Au-delà des métaphores acoustiques et phénoménologiques, ce que je cherchais ici avant tout, c'est la création d'une matière nerveuse, rythmique - mais sans pulsation directement perceptible -, ainsi qu'une ambiguïté entre la perception horizontale des lignes et celle, verticale, du timbre, ambiguïté qui fut longtemps au centre de mes principales préoccupations. La pièce est surtout marquée par le déploiement énergétique et, malgré les contraintes mises en oeuvre, elle est un espace de jubilation et de liberté réappropriée pas à pas. Concerto for Brass Band-Perihelion was commissioned by the Cory Band as their own-choice piece for the 2013 European Brass Band Championships held in Oslo Norway. Winning the set piece section of the contest and coming second to Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag with their own choice selection Cory went on to become European Champions for the fifth time.Cory MD Philip Harper had asked for a ‘Concerto for Band’ to fully exploit his outstanding band of virtuosi and composer Philip Sparke created a one-movement work with contiguous sections first featuring horns and flugel then trombones followed by cornets and a slower central section for percussion and baritones euphonium andbasses.The piece is abstract in nature without a specific programme and the title merely reflects the fact that the piece was begun on January 2nd 2013 the day of Earth’s perihelion - the point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun. It could also be argued that the piece weaves between moments of brilliant optimism and dark shadow both of which can be the result of bright sunshine.

Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Percussion-Landscapes is a work structured around two main ideas. On the one hand the music freely paints some of the superb landscapes I’ve seen during several of my trips around the world. Listeners should however not be influenced by this programmatic framework and are encouraged to build their own ‘mind pictures’.On the other hand Landscapes constitutes a test piece for each section of the brass band. Indeed each musical landscape highlights a particular register. A small group of soloists is given the opportunity to fully display its skills in dialogue with the rest of the band (the tutti) hence the name ‘concerto grosso’. Landscapes also relies on the band’s different soloistmusicians when it comes to express highly complex musically and technically challenging passages.

'Terrestre' was commissioned by Eleanor Eisenmenger in honour of Kaija Saariaho's 50th birthday. It is based on the second movement of the composer's Flute concert 'Aile du Songe' of which the she says:'The firstsection of Terrestre 'Oiseau dansant' introduces a deep contrast with the other material of the concerto. It refers to an Aboriginal tale in which a virtuosic dancing bird teaches a whole village how to dance. The second sectionis a synthesis of all the previous aspects then the sound of the Flute slowly fades away...'
