In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on both instruments making it one of the more important Concerti in the woodwind repertoire. Concerto in D is in three movements; 1. Allegro aperto 2. Adagio non troppo and 3. Rondo: Allegretto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of G major. A Dutch flautist of the time Ferdinand de Jean commissioned Mozartfor four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However the composer who famously disliked the Flute only completed three quartets and one concerto. Instead of composing a second concerto Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. De Jean did not approve yet the Concerto in D for Flute remains as popular to this day as the Concerto in C for Oboe.

The Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in G minor, HWV 287 is a first edition.
Although published in the Handel Complete Edition, IV/12 for oboe in 1971, the work has for many years been considered spurious because no contemporary source existed. This concerto was thought to have been written by an amateur musician who borrowed material from Handel's works written or published after 1733. The situation changed drastically when a contemporary set of parts for the concerto, originally copied in Stuttgart for the Erbprinz Friedrich Ludwig von Württemberg, were found in 1993. These parts, copied about 1720, show that the composer borrowed from this concerto for compositions such as the organ concerto HWV 296a, the concerto grosso op. 6 No.11, HWV 329 as well as the trio sonata in G minor, HWV 390. The parts are titled Concerto à 5 for 1 Flut Travers e Hautb , 2 Violino , 1 Alto Viola Col Basso continuo. This new critical edition by Terence Best is the first to make use of this new source. The score contains a lengthy preface and critical commentary.

All three movements contain a cadenza which initially would have been left forthe performer to improvise. However cadenzas have since been written including those of Johannes Donjon (1839-1912). Donjon was a prominent flautist of his time and his understanding of Mozart's Flute Concerto in D is second to none making his cadenzas well-informed and essential to performers of the concerto.
