But the two soloists, on the other hand, to whom he dedicated the cadences are quite well-known: the harpist, Clelia Gatti Aldronandi and the famous flutist Severino Gazzelloni. Mozart was neither a flautist nor a harpist but his Double Concerto has become the best-known music for both these instruments. Now its musical text has been prepared for Henle by the star flautist András Adorján following the autograph score even in those passages where other editions make arbitrary changes. No less a musician than Robert D. Levin has added historically convincing cadenzas as editorial suggestions; the lean and euphoniousPiano reduction was prepared by the experienced arranger Jan Philip Schulze. Our edition is the first to present the Harp part in form of a performance score. This new volume completes Henle?s series of up-to-date urtext editionsof Mozart?s surviving concertos and chamber music with Flute.

The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work. The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications. Par JARRELL MICHAEL. Michael Jarrell est un compositeur du dialogue. La plupart de ses oeuvres récentes pour grande formation mettent en regard, en écho ou en résonance un ou plusieurs solistes et la masse orchestrale. Citons ...prisme / incidences... pour violon et orchestre (1998), Assonance IX pour clarinette et orchestre (2000), le concerto pour piano Abschied (2001), Epigraphe pour accordéon et orchestre (2003), ou encore Sillages, avec flûte, hautbois et clarinette solistes, joué en première mondiale pendant la saison 2005-2006 de l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Sa toute dernière création ...un temps de silence..., met cette fois la flûte seule en vedette. 'Ce n'est pas un concerto à proprement parler, mais un peu plus que les autres quand même !', confie avec malice le compositeur genevois (entretien réalisé par Luca Sabbatini en février 2007 à Genève). 'Bien sûr, il n'y a pas de hiérarchie traditionnelle soliste/accompagnement. La flûte doit constamment trouver sa place. L'orchestre ne joue pas un rôle de faire-valoir, il possède son autonomie. En cela, ...un temps de silence... est plus proche de mon concerto pour piano que de ...prisme / incidence..., où tout venait du violon.' Comme le titre le suggère, la musique de cette nouvelle oeuvre tend vers sa propre dissolution. 'J'ai voulu faire entendre différents types de silence', confirme Michael Jarrell. 'On ne peut les percevoir qu'en variant les contextes. Le silence n'est pas le même après un seul accord ou après une cascade de notes.' Plusieurs idées temporelles d'affrontent. L'une, très pulsée, naît de l'orchestre et se transmet à la flûte. Une autre correspond à 'des moments hors du temps, qui glissent vers le silence'. La virtuosité exigée du soliste atteint des niveaux de difficulté proprement diaboliques. 'Emmanuel Pahud est venu me rendre visite et nous avons travaillé sur ce qu'il était possible de faire à la flûte', raconte le compositeur. 'La partition est écrite sur mesure, en tenant compte des capacités d'Emmanuel.' ...un temps de silence... s'ouvre sur trois accords marqués des cordes, percussion, harpe et piano, qui reviendront trois fois de façon audible, mais orchestrés différemment. Ces accords génèrent également 'l'harmonie fantôme' sur laquelle repose l'oeuvre. L'orchestre installe peu à peu une pulsation régulière, ce qui 'plonge la flûte dans une situation de stress', selon Michael Jarrell. Elle s'accroche, tente de rattraper l'orchestre, court après lui à bride abattue. La subtilité de la mise en place, avec de nombreux échanges ou superpositions rapides entre soliste et orchestre, rend tout le passage périlleux. Un grand tutti introduit la partie centrale, où les protagonistes entrent en symbiose sur un tempo très lent, qui dérive peu à peu vers un 'hors temps' énigmatique. Puis le silence. La dernière partie repart au galop, mais cette fois c'est la flûte qui dicte son rythme à l'orchestre, qui devient l'axe autour duquel tous les autres instruments tournent. L'orchestre finit par prendre le dessus dans ce jeu du chat et de la souris, au cours d'un épisode d'environ une minute, mené à une vitesse vertigineuse. Deux des trois accords du début reviennent, puis se diluent sur un tempo lent, où les percussions, notamment le bongo, dominent. Michael Jarrell cite alors son propre opéra Galilée, créé au Grand Théâtre de Genève la saison dernière: soutenu par trois rins japonais et quelques instruments, un woodblock aigu joue une pulsation régulière, sur laquelle la flûte vient poser ses commentaires. L'harmonie fait du sur place, le temps se fige, comme un arrêt sur image. La musique ne disparaît pas dans le silence. Elle est devenue son négatif, son ombre, son souffle. The Full Score for Peter Maxwell Davies’ fourth in a series of ten string quartets commissioned by the Naxos Recording company first performed by the Maggini Quartet on 20th August 2004 at the Chapel of the Royal Palace Oslo Norway as part of the Olso Chamber Music Festival. Composer Note: The fourth Naxos quartet was written in January and February of 2004 with the intention of producing something lighter and much less fierce than itspredecessor an unpremeditated and spontaneous reaction to the illegal invasion of Iraq.I returned to the well-known Brueghel picture of children's games (1560 now in Vienna) which had been the inspiration for my sixthStrathclyde Concerto for flute and orchestra. These illustrations liberated my musical imagination but I feel it would limit the listener's perception to be too specific about which game relates to exactly which section of thework. Suffice it to say that there is vigorous play - leap-frog bind the devil with a cord truss wrestling - alongside quieter pastimes - masks guess whom I shall choose courting odds and evens. The single movementjuxtaposes these activities as abruptly and intimately as they occur in Brueghel. Rather as the eye is taken into different perspectives and proportions of scale within the picture taking liberties which would never be presentin for instance Brunelleschi architectural drawings so here with a constant sequence of transformation processes I have distorted the neat precise implications of modal progression expressed in the unison opening phrase(from F to B through A sharp/B flat) so that the ear is led en route into the sound equivalents of strange passageways and closed rooms: sicut exposition ludus.
