Russian composer Alexander Glazounov (1865-1936) was director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory for a large part of his career. As a prolific composer his works were always well-received Concerto In E flat for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra being no exception. Glazounov's compositional style was particularly significant due to his successful reconciliation of nationalism and cosmopolitanism in Russian music. Arne Nordheim's Violin Concerto was composed in 1996 as a commission from the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra for Arve Tellefsen.The solo part has the leading role in the work and is very difficult to play. The composer and Arve Tellefsen therefore were very much in contact with each other during the composition of the work. Arne Nordheim says that for this concerto like in other works he has composed ideas have come to him so to speak out of nowhere. ’It is as if parts of me are extreme; that which is low down or high up that which is very weak or very strong’. The composer has himself told how he has worked withgradual condensation and dissolution in the concerto. It is possible to hear continuous changes of mood in the work but the fundamental mood is according to Nordheim sadness.

Although also a violinist active in the Viennese music scene he was most well-known as a lutenist. He composed a total of seven lute concertos during his lifetime. This Concerto in B-flat Major is in three movements: Allegretto Largo and Tempo di Minuetto. In this edition Victor Van Puijenbroeck has created a piano reduction of the orchestral score and also has adapted the lute part to be played on guitar. Included are parts for both lute (the part has been adapted from lute tablature to modern notation) andguitar (capotasto). Clarinet and Piano-Following the Henle edition of the Grand Concerto In F Minor Op. 5 (HN 1209) the series of Crusell’s Clarinet concertos has been expanded to include the one in B flat major op. 11. The Swedish composer washimself a prominent Clarinet virtuoso and the concertos were tailor-made for himself so to speak. Despite being technically very demanding the Concerto In B Flat Major avoids being overly virtuosic and wins usover with its melodic ingenuity. It is a very welcome addition to the early Romantic repertoire for the Clarinet. The clarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer edited the edition in an exemplary manner consulting the solesurviving source the first edition of 1829. Johannes Umbreit was responsible for the study score which wonderfully fits the hands.

This is not only Mozart’s first concerto for the Violin but his first concerto altogether. He composed it at the age of 17 writing it in Salzburg in 1773 two years before his other four Violin concertos. And what aconcerto it is! This new publication completes Henle’s series of Mozart‘s violin concertos and single movements all of which are now available in exemplary urtext editions with easy-to-play Piano reductions.

These three concertos may be performed not only with a large orchestra including wind instruments but also a quattro that is with two violins one viola and violoncello. As this advertisement shows it was Mozart's intention to keep the accompaniment part flexible in his piano concertos K.413-5 and as we know from a letter Mozart wrote to his father inK.449 as well.
