However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbelâ??s arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbelâ??s manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbelâ??s surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut für Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversität Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. The flute concerto 'Dances with the Winds' was composed in 1974 for the Swedish flautist Gunilla von Bohr, a specialist in all members of the flute family. The ordinary flute thus alternates with a bass flute at the beginning and end of the four-movement concerto, the second movement is assigned to the shrill piccolo and the third to the sensuous alto flute. The last movement is a summary of all the musical events in the concerto. At the end the bass flute soars to the top of its register, the note D acting as the pivot to many of the symmetries in the work, against a resigned B flat minor chord on the orchestra. Mozart excitedly reported to his father that the Comte de Guines played the flute incomparably, while his daughter was magnifique at the harp. He apparently had no reservations about writing a double concerto for this unusual scoring in Paris in 1778 and even though he had just admitted to his father that he couldnt stand the flute. It is surprising, then, that Mozart produced a singular, fairly easily performable work. Could it be that he exaggerated their technical abilities for some reason or other when he described his patrons to his father?The source situation is clear: An autograph has survived which is definitive in every respect, and can be incontestably included in a modern Urtext edition, down to the distinction between staccato dots and dashes.Cadenzas in the piano reduction by Robert D. One of MacMillan's earliest successes was his first percussion concerto, Veni, Veni, Emmanuel (1992), firmly established with hundreds of performances to date. Percussion Concerto no 2 was therefore received with great excitement at its premiere in 2014 by Colin Currie and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. Like its predecessor, the second concerto is formed in a single, c25-minute span, albeit with contrasting sections, but with full orchestra scoring. The significant array of solo percussion is complemented by two orchestral percussion sections; notably the soloist makes use of a recently invented instrument, the aluphone. This edition doesn't include the solo part as a single edition.

Giuseppe Valentini (1681–1753) was one of the few Italian composers contemporary with Vivaldi who wrote concertos featuring wind instruments. Two oboe concertos by him have been known for a long time. In 2022 Michael Talbot discovered a hitherto unknown third concerto, in G minor. It is preserved anonymously in a Swedish collection, but Valentini’s authorship is evident from the fact that all its movements are skilful adaptations, clearly made by the composer himself, of individual movements from two of his string concertos published in Op. 7 (1710). The concerto is typically Roman in scoring, lacking a viola part, and is equally suitable for performance in ‘chamber’ fashion, with one instrument to a part, or in ‘orchestral, fashion, with doubled string parts. It is highly characterful, with moments of great expressive power, and of only moderate difficulty for the soloist.
