Performer and listener alike will be captivated by the creativity with which de Silva weaves melodic material throughout the music, with fresh harmonic tones and rhythmic treatment. The end result is truly a rich palette of colors! I am delighted to include in this series ?? so far almost totally made up of pieces written for me ?? this piece for guitar and piano composed by Giovanni Scapecchi and dedicated to the duo made up of my former student Raffaello Ravasio, who edited the fingering of the guitar part, and of Samuele Amidei. I am also particularly delighted because this piece was commissioned by the Duo Ravasio-Amidei as part of their full project in homage to Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. In this composition, there are many references to the figure and work of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. First of all the duo guitar-piano is the same as in Fantasia Op. 145 by Castelnuovo-Tedesco (written for Andrés Segovia and Paquita Madrigueira), the most famous piece of the twentieth century composed for this formation. The piece by Giovanni Scapecchi, in the form of a Suite of dances, refers explicitly to the one by the famous dedicatee by means of some references which appear in the Sarabanda and in the Giga. The Crete mentioned in the title are, of course, the famous Senese clays which, with their colours and shapes, make up a remarkable part of the Tuscan landscape. Furthermore, profound meanings are attributed by Giovanni Scapecchi to the earth which makes up the clays (like Castelnuovo-Tedesco, he is a native of Tuscany, where he still lives). The Composer recalls first of all that the book of Genesis tells us that the first man was taken from the earth (there is therefore this primordial connection between man and earth). Moreover, the historic man, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, honoured here, maintained a deep relationship with his homeland ?? despite the dramatic separation due to the enforced exile to the USA, which took place in 1939 following the racial laws. Stylistically, I then found a further link between this piece and its dedicatee ?? who was influenced in his early works by musical Impressionism ?? in a certain French atmosphere running through the Suite.(Piero Bonaguri).

Giles Swayne's Zebra Music comprises twelve pieces written to be suitable for the junior contemporary Piano student, offering new music ideas to younger players. As the title suggests, the music is written in 'layers' of black and white keys: one hand may be playing the black keys while the other hand plays the white; or both may be on white, or both on black - only the final piece mixes the colours. By combining these simple modes with exciting and unusual rhythms, Swayne produces a sense of global style within acessible pieces.

'Romance for violin and piano is a short, reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist, Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing, numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece, the ending is somewhat incomplete. This seems to suggest acontinuous turn of events alluded to in the music.' - Helen GrimeBorn in 1981, Helen studied oboe with JohnAnderson and composition with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. The catalogue of Edison Denisov's works includes 16 concertos. It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996.In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from thecomposer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with soniceffects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses. It is, one might say, 'music round about Schubert'. (Ekaterina Kouprovskaia-Denisova).

The composer's description of this fascinating, expressive and unique work:I wrote this piece after being inspired by the poem 'Colours' by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, an older contemporary poet who was of Russian heritage [recently deceased]. This coincided - of course - with the loss of my 'heart's desire'. I wrote one melodic note for each syllable of the English translation of the text. I came up with the melody in the left hand of the piano with right hand playing chords/lines above it. I re-wrote the chordal parts for the guitar [my true instrument] with the idea of a low voice singing the words below the guitar part. It seems the melody was not singable! However, I did not want to change it- I thought the melody was exactly as it should be.This work is about 3 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

Playing with six hands means: voluminous sound in all registers, higher density and harmonic variety of chords without stepping beyond a moderate grade of difficulty in the individual parts. It also means fun for three, practising time-keeping and physical co-ordination as well as working together in a group, exchanging ideas, listening to and fitting in with others. Besides, it is also an excellent way of fitting large numbers of pupils into one recital. Suzhou Gardens is inspired by the Classical Gardens of Suzhou. Alexander Rosenblatt wrote his own Chinese-style melody and spiced up the composition with jazz chords and harmonies. There are many fountains and waterfalls in the gardens, so he tried to depict theoverflows and colours of the murmuring water in his music.

This collection tells little stories on the piano, written for some very young pianists. Each title sets a musical and technical challenge. Individual pieces may be put together to tell a longer story. The pieces are ordered progressively, with some requiring simple preliminary exercises. Easy to start with (using grace notes, playing legato and staccato), they become gradually more demanding as different fingerings, pedal use, phrasing and dynamics are introduced. Articulation, phrasing and tempo markings in this edition represent one possible interpretation; they may be changed or varied at will. The composer is delighted for her creative work to be developed further: titles presented in two versions give examples of this, showing that the bird can shimmer in different colours.
