The organ is the instrument on which the young Giacomo Puccini began his career as a musician. Through the rediscovery of a considerable number of hand-written pieces, which he composed after 1870 as part of his duties as organist in the churches of Lucca, several primary sources are now available. These give an insight into the beginnings of his musical activities which have only been known about from anecdotes from his first biographers until now. Puccini's organ repertoire includes works which were typical for liturgical organ music at that time: sonatas for the main sections of the mass, versets which were substituted for Gregorian chant, marches, which were played after the mass (exceptionally even waltzes), and even a pastorale for Christmas time. This music was written with the sound of instruments made in Tuscany in mind. These have just one manual, a 8 foot Principale register and a small pedalboard always coupled to the manual. In addition there were several solo stops divided into bass and soprano.Puccini contributed with originality to the renewal of Italian organ practice, which began in his day to discard its operatic style in favor of a style more suited to the liturgy.

In Ewigkeit dich loben has now become a permanent fixture in the every-day repertoire of many church musicians. The editor's four-volume concept has proven to be both handy and compelling. With its limitation to the main section of the new Evangelical Hymnal, however, many eager organists increasingly began to ask for preludes to beloved church hymns that are found in the various regional sections of the Hymnal, such as Als ich bei meinen Schafen wacht, Freunde, dass der Mandelzweig and Herr, deine Liebe. In this selection from the approximately 700 hymns of the regional section, the editor has included hymns which have a long history and are thus quite well known, but also certain hymns which are found in more than one regional section. The result is a stylistically varied palette of traditional pieces and newer, lesser known ones that should stimulate the imagination of every organist.in Ewigkeit dich loben features preludes for all the hymns contained in the new Protestant Hymnbook (Evangelisches Gesangbuch, EG)..

“Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, Mass of Pentecost is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Composed in 1949-1950, the Organ Mass is thought to be based on twenty years of improvising at Saint Trinity Church in Paris where Messiaen was organist. Mass of Pentecost is in five movements; 1) Entrance, 2) Offertory, 3) Consecration, 4) Communion, and 5) Recessional. Influences of birdsong are depicted within the piece, reflecting the composer's interest in ornithology. The first movement also contains the use of Greek rhythms. Mass of Pentecost is essential to all advanced organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.â€.

Anton Bruckner composed his Requiem in D minor at the young age of 24 in memory of a friend of his father's who was his patron. The work was greatly influenced by the Viennese classical style. He revised the work at the age of 70 in 1894 and held it in high regard throughout his career, even though his setting never enjoyed the popularity of similar works by Mozart or Verdi in the concert repertoire. The new edition now published represents the revised version, which can be regarded as a very personal, and at the same time impressive compositional testimony to Bruckner's artistic development on his journey towards becoming the great church musician and symphonist. Bruckner set the text of the Requiem Mass in a relatively compact form in terms of extent and scoring. The range of compositional colors stretches from Alpine-influenced writing for male voice choir (Hostias), to a five-part choral movement (Sanctus) and an unaccompanied movement (Requiem), to movements with choir and soloists. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2732000.

Chorale settings form a central part of Telemann's oeuvre. His 1754 setting of the church hymn Christus, der ist mein Leben, based on Melchoir Vulpius' melody from the Hamburg Hymnal, is especially well-suited to display his mastery in depicting the words of the chorale. The so-called Ausfullungsbass (a vocal bass added to the principal bass in tutti passages) was probably necessitated by the acoustical properties of Hamburg's churches. This is the first Urtext edition of this highly successful chorale setting which is based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works. The score contains a realisation of the continuo part.* First Urtext edition based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works* An attractive addition to the repertoire with a view to the Telemann Year 2017* Bilingual Foreword (Ger/Eng)* Uncluttered idiomatic piano reduction.

Here is an addition to every church musicians repertoire: Nine sacred songs by Peter Cornelius on original poems in which he paraphrases the Our Father in a very personal manner. The piano accompaniment is based on ancient liturgical melodies which Cornelius elaborated very imaginatively. By arranging the piano part for organ, Klaus Uwe Ludwig seems to have been inspired by an observation made by Max Hasse in his 1922 biography of Cornelius: The cycle will always resist an orchestral adaptation. The organ seems more accessible as an accompaniment.

The Complete Vocal Works Johann Pachelbel is known today as a composer of organ music and of a world-famous instrumental canon which frequently features in concert programmes and recording catalogues. However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbel's arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbel's manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbel's surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut fur Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut fur Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversitat Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. Fragments and works where Johann Pachelbel's authorship is doubtful appear at the end of the respective group. Each volume includes an introduction (Ger/Eng) and a Critical Commentary (Ger). Format 25.5 x 32.5 cm; cloth-bound.
