The two-movement, incompletely transmitted Horn Concerto in D major K. 412 was long considered as Mozarts first horn concerto; it is, however, his last, and was written between March and December 1791. Mozart undertook revisions in the autograph which contains the most important orchestral parts next to the entire solo horn part in order to adjust the work to the modest technical abilities of the planned soloist Joseph Leutgeb. Mozart revised and completed the first movement, eliminated lower notes in the solo part, rewrote difficult passages and expanded orchestral interludes to give Leutgeb additional breath rests. Mozart also made similar simplifications in the second movement as well, but his early death prevented the completion of the work. Robert D. Levin reconstructed both versions of the concerto on the basis of the autograph. Next to the version revised by Mozart (post correcturam), he now presents the original version (ante correcturam) for the first time in a musical text revised and supplemented according to rigorous philological criteria.

Translation: Engl. (S. Wadsworth) (1988) / (Norbert Rubesaat) (1993); French (Jean-Pierre Wurtz) (1997) Place and time: Jail Munchen-Stadelheim, in the hour before the execution on 22nd February 1943 Characters: Sophie Scholl (soprano) / Hans Scholl (baritone or tenor) >>Weisse Rose<< (White Rose) was the name of the resistance group to which Hans and Sophie Scholl belonged. Udo Zimmermann's composition is characterized by the varying structure of its scenes: dramatic, visionary scenes, e.g. the remembered wartime experiences on the front, Sophie's anxiety about the removal of the children and the wish to see her parents one last time, contrast with contemplative monologues that are intended to provide insights into the individual's particular situation. The composer interweaves into the structure of the piece dream sequences with sudden bursts of anxiety that are not triggered by the execution that is about to take place but by the consequences of one's own actions. The result is a deliberate fusion of the various parts into one another. More than 100 different productions prove that the topic is as important as ever and that the work is both artistically rewarding and practicable. Udo Zimmermann About the piece Two young people, the siblings Sophie and Hans Scholl, are in a prison cell, one hour before they are to be put to death by their fascist executioners. Their christian convictions and sense of responsibility gave them the courage to put up resistance, resistance against the lies, the contempt for humanity and all human values. Sophie and Hans Scholl took their stand in the full knowledge that they were taking a deadly risk. They would simply not have been able to live with their feelings of shame had they not grasped the chance of fighting for what they believed in, even though it was a dangerous thing to do. Memories of past events, doubts, hopes and fears, justification of deeds and an acceptance of death, all these things happen and move in, and between, these two people during this representation of the hour before death. The orchestra provides a psycho-physical shorthand of their inner mental state. Musical effects and gestures search for their identity in human behaviour. The moments of stillness and silence provide moments of musical tension, which are just as powerful as the eruptions of fear and desperation. Henri Casadesus was passionate about early instruments, as we know from a number of photographs showing him with viola d’amore, the subject of a manual he wrote entitled Tecnique de la viole d’amour. The Concerto en Ut mineur was first published in 1947 by Mica Salabert. The first edition gives the so-called “original†part for solo violocello together with the score which, according to the preface, has been adapted for viola or cello or violin by Casadesus. However, stylistic analysis of the piece, together with some musicological research carried out after the appearance of the first edition reveals that the “original†version for violoncello, on which the adaptation was supposed to be based, cannot be attributed to Johann Christian Bach, but is rather a work imitating his style written two centuries later. In spite of this, Concerto en Ut mineur encountered considerable success and continues to be studied and performed by both violinists and violoncellists today.

The piece is part of the ballet Wild Swans, choreographed by Meryl Tankard at the Sydney Opera House in 2002, based on the fairy tale The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen. Originally scored for soprano and orchestra, Eliza Aria introduces Princess Elisa and expresses her pure soul, innocence and belief in the goodness of the world: Without saying a word, she must weave stinging nettles into cloth to save her enchanted brothers. The short, enchanting vocalise is perhaps Elena Kats-Chernin's best-known creation and went around the world as music in a promotional video on YouTube. It is now available in numerous versions for `ifferent instruments and instrumentations.

When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the ACDA, offered Stucky the Brock Memorial Commission, it was decided that the text would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, since the annual convention would take place in Dallas of that year. To that end, Stucky chose four different but pertinent texts to honor the occasion, although never referencing JFK by name. Take Him, Earth was premiered at the ACDA convention in March, 2013. Originally scored for chorus and chamber ensemble of nine instruments (available on a rental basis), Take Him, Earth is presented here in piano reduction. For advanced choirs. Duration: 13'.When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association, very kindlyoffered me the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission for 2013, he suggested that because thepremiere would take place at the national conference in Dallas in the 50th year since the assassinationof John F. Kennedy in that city, the text might refer in some way to that grim anniversary. Hesuggested, too, that I consider using a chamber ensemble or chamber orchestra to accompany thechorus.I took these suggestions to heart, but at the same time I wanted to write something universal enoughto be appropriate on other occasions, in other settings. Thus the score is dedicated to PresidentKennedy’s memory, but otherwise he is never referred to by name. Instead, I assembled a group oftexts that are associated with him in some way, but that also stand alone as a more general eulogy. As a refrain, there are a few lines from the early Christian burial hymn that begins “Take him,Earth, for cherishing†— lines that were earlier set to music by Herbert Howells in his classic motetcommissioned for Kennedy’s memorial service in 1963. The lines of Aeschylus “Drop, drop — inour sleep, upon the heart sorrow falls†from Agamemnon were quoted by Robert F. Kennedy uponthe death of Martin Luther King in April 1968. The celebrated “When he shall die, cut him out inlittle stars†from Act III of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was cited by RFK a few months after hisbrother’s murder.

The range of themes treated is vast, proof of the central nature of the instrument in European musical life on the cusp of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. On the basis of original research, investigations have been made into the different ways in which the spread of instruments and printed music occurred; into the movements of musicians circulating from one end of Europe to the other; into the circulation of genres, forms, musical styles and stylistic elements conveyed including through the teaching of the instrument; into the presence of the pianoforte in the European literature and the arrangements for instruments at the beginning of the nineteenth century; into the role of the pianoforte in certain important centres in Europe and the United States. A rich period for European music, therefore, in which the opportunities for contact and mutual exchange among the musicians were particularly intense and in which the pianoforte acted as a catalyst in private and public musical life in all the cities of Europe. The volume comes with the bonus of a CD, appositely providing pianoforte sonatas by Cramer, Hummel, Eberl and Beethoven.
