In China Fantasy Helmut Quakernack brings together two traditional Chinese folk melodies with their different characters with musical panache. The moving song is about a blind musician and the heartfelt love song come from the other side of the globe, but their melodies and harmonies sometimes sound surprisingly European.

For Piano Solo. By Jianjun He. Synthesizing Western compositional techniques with Chinese musical elements, Fantasy for Piano shows the fusion of different cultures and the diversity of today's music. There are two main melodic ideas: one uses a whole-tone scale, somewhat related to the folk music of Ningxia, my home province in northwest China; the other, with its shifting major and minor thirds, shows a connection toWestern tonal music. The piece is roughly in three-part form: fast-slow-fast. Although the last part is derived from the first, each of the three has its own characteristics, while the entire piece is unified by the two melodic ideas described above. Fantasy for Piano is available on the VMM (Vienna Modern Masters) label recorded by Jeffrey Jacob.

A few flavoursome introductory bars carry the listener off to a temple garden in Manchuria in North-eastern China. Mysterious incantations of the priests in the temple and the scent of incense set the scene, while the melody tells of two lovers. A Manchurian wedding procession passes by outside. In the street the coolies are becoming restless. Within the temple, all is calm. Again we hear the incantations of the priest before the lovers’ theme is heard in birdsong, with short quotes from the temple theme and coolie theme to end the piece. All’esterno sfila un corteo nuziale. Vocal score available separately: 1883-12-050 MS.

Avalon–Long Live the King is a medieval fantasy piece depicting the Isle of Avalon where the mystical sword Excalibur of King Arthur was forged. Composer Tyler Arcari unearths a solid piece for young bands that is both bold and dramatic. This piece is sure to spark the imagination of students and give them strong musical content with which they can develop their musicianship.Program Notes:Avalon–Long live the King began its journey as a commission in honor of a dear friend and mentor. David Riggs is one of those band directors that just seems timeless. He is a powerhouse with such a stacked resume that it is easy to forget that at the end of the day he enjoys taking long bike rides with his lovely wife and whittling a piece of wood just as much as being a band director. He has touched so many lives and inspired so many people in our field and beyond. I was humbled, and honored, when I was contacted for the commission. To David, I hope that you one day know how much you mean to so many people, including myself.About the piece:The piece is written with a little homage to David’s long tenure at Avalon Middle school in Pace, Florida. He was certainly treated like a king as the band director and rightly so. It seemed only fitting to add a little medieval fantasy. Avalon is a mystical island in the world of King Arthur where the great sword Excalibur was forged. The piece begins lyrically with a slow introduction with melodic material. This melodic motive is used throughout with slight variations depending on the instrument voicing etc. Care should be taken at m. 10 that the Timpani roll helps to bridge our transition from an exposed section to full tutti. Care should be taken so that the tempo change at m. 19 is brisk and avoids the low brass turning into stomping. Accessories like the China cymbal and tambourine can become overpowering. I recommend having students think of these effects as background in order to make sure they don’t POP out. The dynamic changes at mm. 27-35 should be subito similar to orchestral dynamic changes. Avoid unwritten crescendos in this section. Measures 60–64 are a great opportunity to teach those unwritten dynamics that make music so enjoyable as we lead up to the finale. It was originally left blank for some theatrics in the premiere at David’s retirement concert so I know he would enjoy adding some Cholesterol as David would say.Long Live the King!

Commissioned by Music From China ensemble and Prism Saxophone Quartet, with a grant provided by the New York State Council on the Arts in 2008. Premiered in New York City, February 2009.Commissioned by Music From China ensemble and PRISM Saxophone Quartet, with a commissioning grant provided by the New York State Council on the Arts in 2008.The imagination of this music came from the figures in the murals carved in the Mogao Caves in the ancient city Dunhuang more than a thousand years ago. The name Dunhuang originally meant “prospering, flourishing.” Lying at the western end of the Gansu Corridor in China, Dunhuang was very important in the Silk Road that carried new thoughts, ideas, arts and sciences to the East and West in the ancient time. The Mogao Grottoes were built and developed over 11 dynasties over more than 1,000 years (from the 4th to 14th centuries), with murals, sculptures, wooden cave buildings and books. It was really the heyday of the art of Dunhuang in the brilliant Tang Dynasty (618-907). The murals depict rolling dance gestures, the flapping streamer lines, the flying melodies around the clouds, and the fiery rhythms in the sky! They show the high spirit and the strong power of the people and their society. All these impressions are translated into the textures of the two Chinese traditional instrumental parts with support from a set of percussion instruments, and the sound of a saxophone quartet. It’s mysterious, vivid, colorful and energetic, it brings us to dream of the ancient glory and yearn for the future...—Chen Yi.

The Great Wall developed out of an improvisation, a homage to the Great Wall of China. Two motifs dominate in the work, which requires a three-manual organ: a two-measure ostinato in the pedal, and an oriental-sounding melody found on the manuals, in the basic shape and in the variations. The music leads seamlessly from an atmospheric picture into a rhythmically-driven crescendo, is interrupted by a storm fantasy before ending, after a second upsurge, in a radiant fortissimo. The dynamics and articulation are given very precisely in the score. The registration markings relate to the four-manual Muhleisen organ in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, and are intended as a guide for performance. This thrilling work, which recalls Ravel's Bolero at certain moments, communicates directly with a wide range of audiences.
