It was at a flute convention, of all places, where the composer learned how to beatbox. Greg Pattillo, the flutist of the ensemble Project Trio, taught a roomful of (mostly) flute players how to make a few sounds, and she couldn't believe how easy, and effective, it was! She figured, if a random bunch of adult flute players can do this, it should be a piece of cake for students. Inspired by this new-found knowledge, she composed 7th Street Beat, writing beatbox percussion into the parts of all the instruments. The sounds imitate percussive effects normally made by a drum set. The beatbox vocal lines are optional - they are reinforcements for the beatbox sounds in the string parts. Also optional (but highly recommended!) is the improvisation section starting at m. 49. Don't tell the students any rules about what notes to play or not play - simply offer them the opportunity to make up whatever they like, to show off their abilities and musical personalities!.It was at a flute convention, of all places, where the composer learned how to beatbox. According to Ermelinda Paz , Marujo do Rosario (literally translated from the Portuguese as Sailor of the Rosary) comes from the hydrographic region of the Sao Francisco River, a basin that includes the states of Minas Gerais, Bahia, Pernambuco, Sergipe, and Alagoas. This song most likely belongs to a style of dramatic dance called cheganca-de-marujo (arrival of sailor). In this tragicomic street drama, the community of actors enact a story in which they demonstrate their experiences as if they were in a vessel lost at sea. In this dance, several characters dressed as sailors and carrying small sail boats on their shoulders, parade through the streets singing and dancing to a march. When they arrive at a determined house, they place their little sail boats on the floor and start the dramatic play. This song seems to be performed when the sailors arrive at the chosen location. The Portuguese lyrics E com licenca e, olele, e com licenca do dono da casa, o e com licenca e means please excuse me, I have permission from the houses owner to come in. This arrangement is scored for three-part mixed with optional baritone, piano, and pandeiro. The pandeiro is a Brazilian frame drum with jingles played with the hands, similar to the orchestral tambourine. It is used in various music styles but particularly in samba and bossa nova. In fact, feel free to substitute the pandeiro with the orchestral tambourine. The text is very short and simple. To make your singers Portuguese pronunciation more accurate, do not close final m or n. Just nasalize them. Most of us, when confronted with the term graffiti, are likely to associate it with the rather desolate wall scrawlings all over our urban landscapes. However, this is not the whole picture: no less artists than Klee, Miro, Dubuffet, and Picasso were interestedin it (the latter painting examples himself on Parisian walls). In our time, there is the highly interesting and controversial phenomenon of Street Art, which has occasionally wittily succeeded in criticizing the commercialization of cities. At their best, street artists have been able to thwart the expectations created by omnipresent mass media and by advertising - one can find some particularly remarkable examples in metropolises such as Berlin, Paris, or New York. Though this was the initial stimulus for Graffiti, it finally branched into rather different directions: it is only very loosely, ifat all, connected to the phenomenon of Street Art (or to the visual arts). The music is not illustrative nor is it programmatic and the main idea was to compose a music which is not restricted as to time or place, and which offers strong contrasts between different modes of expression. The three movements headings give a hint of the changing modes, moods, and structures of the music. The first movement, Palimpsest,is polydimensional and many-layered; one can hear allusions to a multiplicity of styles. The second movement, Notturno urbano, forms a strong contrast to the hyperactive previous movement. It starts with distant and gradually approaching bell-like sounds, from which the whole movement's musical material is being derived. The instruments are often used in an unconventional way: the winds as well as the strings employ extended techniques, which contributes to the aloofness and the mysteriousness of the movement. The third, highly virtuosic, movement, is a kind of an 'urban passacaglia' (the name of this musical form actually derives from the Spanish 'pasar una calle', 'to walk along a street'). It consists of eight incisive chords, which are played continuously by the brass, albeit always in a different way. Two worlds collide in this movement: the brass attacks are commented upon by flitting interjections of different instruments, which are highly varied in character and length. As a whole, the musical language of Graffiti shifts between roughness and refinement, complexity and transparency. It is rich in contrast and labyrinthine, neither tonal nor atonal. Graffiti calls for great agility, virtuosity, and constant changes of perspective from the musicians; each instrument is being treated as a soloist. Graffiti was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, Barbican, London; Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Kunststiftung NRW and Ensemble musikFabrik. It was first performed on 26th of February 2013 by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group conducted b.

Minerva by Jan Van der Roost was composed on the commission of the German “Musikverein Braunshausen†on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the orchestra. The composition, first performed on September 17, 1999, is not a street march but a concert march, just like Mercury and Arsenal. The use and variation of different rhythmic patterns gives the first part of this march a distinctly dynamic character. Two main themes are presented in several instrumental combinations. The theme from the trio, on the other hand, is characterized by a broad melodic approach using large intervals. This theme, wreathed by high woodwinds, is heard one more time after a contrasting newpart, but now in a somewhat slower tempo. The counterpoint in this part refers to the first part of the march. The brilliant ending suits a festive anniversary march!

A wonderful suite for organ, brass (and/or strings), and timpani of arrangements of four classic hymn tunes. The suite consitsts of a flowing setting of duke street in 6/8 followed by a march-like treatment of azmon with some imitative writing, then a transition to the minor key and more austere character of wer ner den lieben gott, and finally a fanfare-like introduction to a grand setting of diademata. This piece would be a great prelude for a hymn festival or concert. .

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a French composer who was well-known and well-regarded in his lifetime. His legacy included breaking from the grand opera tradition and influencing the next generation of Frenchcomposers. March of the Marionette was originally a piano solo titled Funeral March of a Marionette. Gounod wrote the piece to make fun of the music critic, Henry Chorley. The marionette dies in a duel, possibly a musical imitation of a public argument about the merits of Gounod’s compositions. The marionette’s friends have a funeral for him, creating a procession through the streets, with a brief stop for refreshments, illustrated in the D major section. This now-familiar theme has been used in frequently in advertisements, movies, and television shows. It was used as the theme music for Alfred Hitchcock Presents television show (1956-66) introducing dramas, mysteries, and thrillers. The prevailing bow strokes in this piece range from spiccato stroke to a light brush stroke for all eighth notes, regardless of articulation markings. Students should experiment with bow distribution to discover the appropriate placement for different dynamics. Students just learning the spiccato bow stroke will be more successful if they start this bow stroke close to their bow hand. Encourage students to discuss the character of the music and how to bring the storyline to life as an ensemble.

Hold on tight, this is a tour de force for more advanced groups. With a slew of contemporary compositional elements including mixed-meter, extended harmonies, and angular rhythms, this piece contains a fullness that composer George Sweet's works are known for. It's challenging, but the musical rewards abound.A bazaar is an enclosed marketplace or street where various merchants and craftsmen sell their wares. The image of a crowded bazaar in a land far away was the inspiration for the piece. The variety of different people, cultures, and merchandise present in a bazaar allowed for a piece that has many different styles, moods, and characters (both humorous and serious). After the introduction, which represents the grand entrance of the bazaar, the main theme is presented by the violin 1 at m. 15. The meter changes frequently throughout the piece, but the eighth note stays constant. Be careful to subdivide the different time signatures carefully, as these changing meters occur. A melodic and flowing B-theme occurs at m. 37. After a varied restatement of both themes, new material occurs at m. 63. This C-section contrasts with the rhythmic activity thus far and should be played as legato and as sustained as possible. Be careful to time the divisi entrances and the pyramid-style chords in this section correctly, in order to keep the tempo secure. The rhythmic A- and B-themes return at m. 83 in a varied form, and lead to a climactic passage. The tempo changes that occur from mm. 105 to 114 are very slight and are open to the interpretation of the conductor. Feel free to move the tempo throughout this section using the markings as a guideline. The desired effect is one of pushing and pulling the tempo through this section. The introduc- tory material returns at m. 114 and brings the piece to a close.

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante†in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.Het tempo van deze mars is statig en de thema’s zijn concertant van karakter: Artemis is dus eerder geschikt als concertmars dan als loopmars.
