Greene’s seven chamber arias – today, we would call them ‘concert arias’ – include a set of six that appears to have been custom-written for Faustina Bordoni, the great Venetian diva, during her visits to London in 1726–28, since (among other things) they all showcase her ‘trademark’ note: the E in the top space of the treble clef that particularly thrilled opera-goers. The obbligato violin part for all of them was probably written for the violinist and composer Mauro D’Alay, her constant companion and reputed lover. All six works are substantial and full of character and expression as well as melodiousness and contrapuntal finesse. They show a composer at the peak of his inspiration and ambition.

The Peasant Cantata BWV 212 is unique in Bach's cantata output both in content and musically. Although it belongs to Bach's homage cantatas, the text deals only indirectly with praise for a new chamberlain. Rather, the eloquent characters portray situations from rural life, which are also reflected in the music: Bach often drew on well-known dance movements and folk tunes. Because of this the cantata as a whole seems less 'academic' than his (surviving) sacred vocal music. Just two arias were composed in the typical da capo structure in which the musicians' abilities are put to the test. But because of the shortness of the other movements, the cantata is extremely varied. Picander's humorous text makes the cantata extremely versatile, far beyond its original purpose. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3121200.

The piano series entitled Games, written from 1973 onwards, was conceived as a piano method. As the years went by, the series lost its didactic character, at it came to be seen as a document from Kurtág's workshop, offering a key to his grander symphonic, chamber and vocal works as well.Tenth volume is divided into two parts: In the first half, earlier, hitherto unpublished pieces line up from Suite, written in 1943, to the 1980s, providing insight into the development of Kurtág's musical language. The second half includes pieces composed between 2002 and 2011. The movements, often aphorismic in their briefness, hide associations with various aspects of European music history. Many of them are hommage or in memoriam pieces, or subjective personal messages to friends, colleagues, and beloved family members - and thereby to all music-loving people.
