And nothing is better suited to this than well-loved and popular Christmas classics.The volumes in our series for instrumental teaching, developed in collaboration with the Landesakademie für die musizierende Jugend in Baden-Württemberg, all contain 20 easy carols arranged in progressive level of difficulty. Experienced instrumental teachers have made a selection of carols for each instrument according to specific criteria. These can be mastered as part of music school lessons after just a few weeks and months. All the carols have been chosen and transposed so that the range and fingering combinations do not exceed the level of difficulty for the first three years of learning.The piano accompaniment is of moderate difficulty. For many of the carols, an ad lib upper or lower part is included which can also be played by instrumental pupils. The volumes are therefore suitable for individual as well as group tuition.The arrangements are based on the piano and instrumental books from the CHRISTMAS CAROLS project (Carus 2.403/03 und 2.404/03) which is part of the LIEDERPROJEKT, the charitable project to further singing with children. The books contain singing texts for all the carols, providing a full range of options for singing and playing together at Christmas.All the books include the printed music of the piano accompaniment. Christmas is a time for making music especially in ensembles. This edition with its very easy arrangements for two violins viola and cello is ideal for beginner string players to get into the Christmas spirit. The 27 pieces are based either on works of Baroque composers such as Lully or Handel or on traditional mostly German Christmas carols. One of the pieces requires an additional violin another a viola.With their uncomplicated structure and accompanying parts which tie in closely with the melody these pieces encourage ensemble playing from an early age.

I wrote Christmas Light for a choir and glockenspiel to celebrate poet Betty McKellarâ??s 90th birthday. I love the colour and imagery in Bettyâ??s work and the honesty and clarity of her writing.I first discovered her work in the 1990s and set her poem Cramasie Threid for soprano and cello.I then took the poem Sangsters as the starting point for a concerto for orchestra which was premiered by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in 2002. I have always enjoyed collaborating with non-professional and community groups which I find stimulating and inspiring. These are musicians for whom music is an absolute pleasure â?? who give time without payment in the midst of busy lives often withdemanding jobs and family commitments. They do this because they love music and the companionship and buzz of working together. The enthusiasm always communicates to the audience and some of the most memorable performances of my music have been in churches schools and community halls. This short piece is a tribute to Bettyâ??s creativity warmth and optimism.
