Musaic (1969) by Per Nørgård - for Brass Ensemble and Electronics. Instr.: 5 Cornets 3 Trombones and Electronics Progamme Note Among my compositions for brass band three (“Backlight” “Massifs” - crystals - cascades” “Musaic”) all belong to a three-dimensional space. Thus “Massifs - crystals - cascades” was proclaimed from a mountainside towards the audience in the Norwegian town Tromsø and “Backlight” to the special room of the new concert hall at The Music Conservatory of Jutland Denmark.  “Musaic” was composed in 1969 for the inauguration of Edition Wilhelm Hansen’s new branch in Århus Jutland. Short movements for brass were intermittently heard on the street. In the concert hall all the movements were however heard - also the ones already played; by means of a continuous tape individual fragments of the ´street music´ were gradually collected into one concluding uninterrupted piece lasting all in all 10 minutes a mus(a)ic/muza(i)k…  A synthesis can be heard on a CD from 2007 (by the Brass Ensemble of The Royal Danish Conservatory Jutland) with the note that the work might be much longer when performed live.  Per Nørgård (2007)  Parts available: KP01903A

Full Score-Full orchestra score for Per Nørgård's Symphony No. 5 (1987-90 rev.1991). Manuscript copy. Programme note: My 5th Symphony was commissioned by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and premiered on December 6th 1990 by and dedicated to the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.  After the premiere in 1990 I decided to revise the beginning (and only the beginning) of the work. The first pages of the score were discarded and about 20 seconds of new music was written in the summer of 1991. The new and final versionwas premiered on 1st of May 1992.  The symphony progresses without pauses between movements often in several layers of tempo with mutual ´golden section´proportions. The listener´s experience of form in the work will therefore depend on the directions of his own attention. But so far as overall divisions are concerned four sections (perhaps five) - running into each other - can be traced: an expansive cascading introduction a kind of scherzo an chaconne-like adagio and a kind of finale again with the phenomenon of ´cascades´ as a main idea. However as the course is from time to time thrown into chaos by convulsive twitching and crises other experiences of form are opened out within a spectrum from wild to cautious from dramatic to contemplative in a universe of tempi which can suggest the title of a book of poems by the Danish Michael Strunge (1958-1986): ´Velocity of life.´  A listener described the symphony as “a walk with a fire-breathing dragon” and a reviewer described it with words like “a pacifist in times of war”. Anyway words and programme note are – as Carl Nielsen said about titles – only “road signs” for personal experiences in the area of music itself.  Per Nørgård

for Solo Bb Clarinet and Piano-Cette oeuvre en deux mouvements pour clarinette et orchestre fut commandée par Musica Reservata vof Belgique et est dédiée à Eddy Vanoosthuyse un bon ami et confrère du compositeur. Elle connut du succès à sa première mondiale le 10 décembre 2008à Salt Lake City (Etats-Unis) interprétée par l?orchestre Utah Philharmonia sous la direction de Robert Baldwin avec Eddy Vanoosthuyse comme soliste. Par la suite l?oeuvre fut mise de côté pendant quelques années surtout parce que les agendaschargés des deux protagonistes ne leur permettaient pas de trouver le temps pour un enregistrement discographique. Pour finir l?oeuvre fut enfin enregistrée en juin 2015 à Nagoya (Japon) avec le Central Aichi Symphony Orchestra mené par l?étoilemontante vénézolane SergioRosales. La même semaine le 12 juin l?oeuvre fut présentée en concert pour la première fois au Japon par les mêmes interprètes et connut ici aussi un grand succès. Après Concerto Doppio pour deux clarinettes et orchestre à cordes composé en 2001 voici la deuxième oeuvre de concert de Jan Van der Roost qui met la clarinette en vedette.Le premier mouvement Doloroso e Contemplativo transmet le côté sérieux de la clarinette et par conséquent il n?y figure presque pas de virtuosité ou de spectacle. Au contraire l?orchestration colorée et variée qui est entrelacée autour de lapartie solo est bien plus qu?un simple accompagnement et prend la forme de partenairemusical d?importance comparable au soliste. Une introduction un peu mystérieuse mène à une première apogée orchestrale en passant par des cellules musicales ascendantes. Ensuite on entend l?entrée du soliste d?abord par des idées musicales plusfragmentaires puis par des lignes mélodiques plus longues. L?orchestre entre en dialogue avec le soliste et son instrumentation délicate et colorée crée un parfait encadrement musical. Vers la fin l?atmosphère du début est réaffirmée et lesoliste finit par la même note par laquelle il avait commencé.Le deuxième mouvement Giocoso e Con Bravura est une toute autre histoire : ici le côté virtuose et parfois presqu?acrobatique de la clarinette est exploré. Des cascades imposantes et continuelles de notes demandent une dextérité exceptionnelleau soliste ce qui à un certain moment et « récompensé » par l?orchestre par un clin d?oeil au « Hallelujah » de Handel ? vraiment mérité après ces feux d?artifice ! De temps en temps l?instrument solo présente une phrase humoristique : laclarinette ne peut pas que chanter briller et pleurer mais aussi rire et plaisanter. Plusieurs passages sont presque caricaturaux ! La palette variée de cet instrument magnifique est démontrée parfaitement parfois avec un brin d?humour oud?ironie. Work for Chamber dating from 1988.The composer writes:MINNEWATER means ‘love water’/‘love lake’ but when I began to compose the work this direct meaning of the title was not very important to me. Rather the word itself had a magical sound. Later on however it occurred to me that the piece was full of mumbling swells and swarming cascades and the sensation of water is perhaps most perceptible towards the end where lots of falling water movements are felt behind the emphasized rhythmic surface. Falls that moreover quite literally at the end sinks into the water. MINNEWATER has a subtitle: THOUSANDS OF CANONS which directly refers to a compostion techniquewhere all layers and elements in the music constantly are imitated; possibly waves imitating each other? The mudded and impalpable beginning of the work takes its starting point in one of my earlier pieces the sextett LES TUCHINS (in fact the first 5 or 6 pages of the two pieces are quite identical but in MINNEWATER it is all ‘blown up’ to a larger ensemble). Quite soon however the thread to LES TUCHINS is cut off and it goes its own way; From the mumbling in the start - through swarming trills and pointilistic staccato movements - to a long section where the trumpet appears as a soloist and in a way conducts the movements of the remaining ensemble right to the rhythmic final section of the piece. Bent Sørensen MINNELIEDER - ZWEITES MINNEWATER (1988 revised 1994).This work is a new version of the work MINNEWATER from 1988. The form and harmony have been more or less retained but in the new orchestration new melodies have been elicited from the mumbling surf and bustling cascades. MINNELIEDER -ZWEITES MINNEWATER is a commission work from the Caput Ensemble composed with support from 'Nomus'.

Arrangeur: Teil Buck. This volume consists of six rags composed by Scott Joplin, arranged for oboe, clarinet and bassoon (trio d'anches) by Teil Buck. The Maple Leaf Rag was first published in 1899 and as a result of its popularity, Joplin was from then on referred to as the 'King of Ragtime.' The Palm Leaf Rag was composed in 1903 while Joplin lived in St. Louis, Missouri and was composed at the same time as his first opera, 'A Guest of Honor,' which was subsequently lost. The Swipesy Cakewalk was composed in 1900 by Scott Joplin along with his composition student Arthur Marshall, whose family he lived with during the late 1890s. The title of The Easy Winners comes from the same sporting expression in which an athlete wins an event without difficulty, and the original cover depicted scenes of baseball, football, horse racing and sailing. The Favorite was composed in 1904, and although not much is known about it, its publication came around the same time as three other famous rags, 'Cascades,' 'The Sycamore,' and 'The Chrysanthemum.' The last piece in the collection, The Entertainer, is one of the most recognizable pieces of music ever written. The sounds of water - jets of water, cascades and streams - have always been a favorite subject of musical impressionism. Following Liszt, who had already followed this path with his ?Water games at the Villa d'Este?, Ravel was also inspired by this theme. In doing so, he innovated on the compositional level: in his ?Water games?, he developed an ?outstanding? harmony and achieved new descriptive sound effects.
