If you have a college choir, or an above-average high school or church choir, and if you've grown a bit weary of the same or similar Christmas repertoire year after year, look at these settings of two classic carols: a 16th-century translation of part of Luther's Vom Himmel hoch and an 18th-century work by an under-appreciated poet. Using an old English carol, Michael Joncas has composed a modal anthem, hinting at the text’s origin. The use of soloists is optional. The heartwarming story reveals, perhaps, why we continue to link the stork and newborn babies to this very day!

This well-known and frequently performed carol is scored for brass. After a unique 16-measure intro, the first time through is very close to the choral version. The second and third repetitiona contain enough variation to keep things interesting. Probably equally as enjoyable in this version as when sung. For this arrangement, substituting the French horn for trombone I might be the preferred choice. The tuba is entirely optional. .

Sometimes the simplest words, melody, and harmonies come together to make magic. This Christmas Eve anthem is a lullaby yet also a proclamation of Christ’s coming, the music somehow both reverent and triumphant at the same time. Do not miss this one.
