First gaining prominence in Australia in the 1970s as a composer of music for dance Carl Vine has 25 dance scores to his credit. His catalogue also includes seven symphonies eight concertos music for film television and theatre electronic music and numerous chamber works. Although primarily a composer of modern 'classical' music he has undertaken tasks as diverse as arranging the Australian National Anthem and writing music forthe Closing Ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics (the 'Sydney 2000' presentation). This complex and challenging Piano Sonata was composed by Vine for the Sydney Dance Company in 1991. It isdedicated to the Australian pianist Michael Kieran Harvey who first performed the piece in North Melbourne in June 1991.The music is full of rich chordal movements unusual flowing harmonies and tonalities with greatextremes of dynamic and energy. Reflecting the physical origins of the piece as a dance the music is dotted with very strict changes of tempo which require exact adherence rather than the Rubato approach that typifies many Pianointerpretations.

Carl Vine's Piano Concerto No. 1 (1997) is one of three large-scale works composed with pianist Michael Kieran Harvey in mind---the others being his first two piano sonatas. Vine describes it as a conscious and continuous tribute to the piano concerto as a medium and historical entity, a fact most apparent in the slow movement, with its long melodic lines evoking both Ravel and Bach. This 25-minute concerto is cast in the familiar three-movement form, with fast outer movements framing a central slow movement. The outer movements share some material (particularly in some lively conversational interchanges between piano and trumpet), and also some typically pianistic glitter across the orchestra, with harp and glockenspiel ensuring that the piano is less of an outsider than might have otherwise been the case.

Soaring is a work commissioned by the G. Ray Bodley High School Bands under the direction of Terrance Caviness in Syracuse, New York. The work is dedicated to my dear friend David Bamonte, who is currently the Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Oregon Symphony in Portland, Oregon. David, Terry and I have been friends and colleagues for many years and were looking for a project to collaborate with each other. This work was originally written for Trumpet and Concert Band, but I quickly realized that it would work really well with a piano accompaniment as well. The result is the work you see here. As a trumpet player myself, I grew up studying the works of Arban, Clarke, Hindemith, Arutunian, Hummel, Haydn and the more modern sonatas by Kent Kennan and Halsey Stevens. This music is an homage to these great masters while keeping my original voice intact. At times, the piece is lush and lyrical while other moments showcase the power and majesty of the trumpet sound. The music is even a touch athletic while having a musical conversation with the piano. Enjoy the journey of discovering this exciting new work for you and your students. --Sean O'Loughlin.Soaring is a work commissioned by the G.
