Harri Wessman's Capriccio for wind ensemble (1989) puts the idea of caprice into practice in various ways. The inspiration for the title comes from the definition of 'capriccio' given by Michael Praetorius (1571-1621): If one attempts to treat a fugue according to his own pleasure and desire, and does not persist long in this, but rather turns soon to another fugue as it come to mind or occurs to him. The ten-minute-long work in three movements is scored for the same instruments as Mozart's Serenades for winds: 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon and 2 French horns. The outer movements are extremely folk-musicianly and must be played in a way that makes them brashly temperamental. They are separated by an Andantino, as a cor anglais and oboe dream unfolded on the velvety carpet of the other instruments. It was commissioned and premiered by the wind players of Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in April 1989.

Capriccio for Trombone was commissioned by Brett Baker, trombone soloist and member of the famous Black Dyke Band. It is a tribute to the late Mike Moor, close friend and colleague of both Brett and the composer. The piece aims to capture Mike's good humour, his love for brass band music and the irrepressible, enthusiastic energy he involved in all things he did in his life.

Capriccio is a term for a musical work that doesn’t strictly adhere to formal ‘classical’ conventions but rather follows its own ideas. The composer Pascal Proust plays about with the listener’s normal expectations in an amusing way, such as presenting a slow swing groove in the piano that is overlaid with a barcarolle-like theme in in the winds, or the colourful coming-together of straight rock and tango… A varied and effective concert piece for four ambitious musicians!

Concerto Cappricioso begins with a short fanfare-like opening. It?s three movements then develop with exciting dialogues between the soloist and the main concert band, which both answers and accompanies the soloist, in addition to adding their own new material. The musical game between the solis and accompaniment will captivate and delight your audience every time.

Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed Capriccio Italien, Op. 45, in 1880 following a trip to Rome with his brother, Modest. Originally titled Italian Fantasia, the work incorporates the music he heard from his room and on the streets during Carnivale in a single fantasy, using the orchestra to create a uniquely Tchaikovsky sound portrait. It was first performed on December 18, 1880, by the Russian Musical Society Orchestra, Nikolay Rubinstein conducting, and it has been a mainstay in concert halls since. Lasting 27 minutes, Kalevi Aho’s String quartet no. 4 (2021) is in four movements. The first, Nocturne, begins with a hazily muted melody dominated by the interval of a minor third on the second violin. Though the first movement begins in nocturnal mood, there is also some more forceful music around the middle. The second movement, Allegro capriccioso, is quick with quirky rhythms. At times tempestuous, it faces the players with the biggest technical and virtuoso challenges. The following Largo is slow. A couple of times in the first half it is dominated by soft, mysterious harmonies. The tempo marking of the virtuosic closing movement is Presto, leggiore. The movement begins with quick, flickering, will-o’-the-wisp-like music. It later builds up to an extremely violent climax dominated by tremolo figures on the second violin and thick chords on the other instruments. The flickering music of the beginning returns at the end, before dissolving into silence. This product includes the full score (A4) and the parts (B4).
