Cantus

Cantus Mysticus was commissioned by The Foundation for the Cuenca Religious Music Week. First performance on 22nd March 2005 as part of the XLIV Cuenca Religious Music Week by Joan Enric Lluna (clarinet) Patricia Rozario(soprano) and the Madrid Community Orchestra conducted by the composer. The composer writes: Cantus Mysticus sets a text by Goethe concerned with the Eternal Feminine: Das ewig Weibliche sichuns hinan (TheEternal Woman draws us upwards). Many of my recent works have been concerned with meditation on the Creative Feminine which according to esoteric metaphysics reveals the 'child of the soul' and thus God. The slow contemplativeand very intense opening of Cantus Mysticus leads gradually towards a 'still centre' with much use of 'silence'. This is followed by an ecstatic celebration of the Divine Feminine the Virgine Madre of Dante and Christianity theMaha Maya of Hinduism and Maha Prajavati of Buddhism. The Jazz-style passages for clarinet express Lîla or Divine Play. Cantus Mysticus is scored for B flat clarinet soprano and strings (violins and cellos only).

The Riga-based composer created his ideal sound image after listening to the famous organ of the Cathedral of Riga. The basic idea of the organ work 'Cantus ad pacem' is, as with almost all of his compositions, the personal understanding of nature: the beauty of nature, on the one hand, and the destruction of nature by man, on the other hand. Chanter sur le Livre, à la Renaissance, c'est ajouter une ou plusieurs voix à une mélodie écrite, le cantus firmus. Autour de cette mélodie, qu'elle soit de plain-chant, de chanson, de psaume, etc., les chanteurs improvisent d'autres lignes, en créant le contrepoint sur le vif. Du gymel (à 2 voix) en passant par le faux-bourdon (à 3 voix) et jusqu'aux contrepoints à 4 et 5 voix, ce manuel pratique explore méthodiquement les différentes techniques d'improvisation sur cantus firmus... ou sans cantus firmus, comme les canons à 2 et 3 voix. Für die herausragende Qualität der insgesamt 160 Vorspiele plus Begleit - sätze bürgen die rund fünfzig katholischen Domorganisten aus Deutsch - land, Österreich und der Diözese Bozen/Brixen. Die Ausgabe bietet Vorspiele oder Intonationen plus die zugehörigen Sätze zur Gemeindebegleitung und richtet sich an haupt- und nebenamt- liche Kirchenmusiker. Robert Saxton's Hortus Musicae Book 1 was commissioned by Ian Richie for the 2013 City of London Festival with funds provided by the John S. Cohen Foundation. The first performance was given by Clare Hammond on June 24th 2013 at the church of St Mary Le Bow. The title less 'literal' in Latin than in the vernacular refers to the idea of an allegorical/metaphysical garden (reference to a 'real' or existing garden might be implied by Hortus Musicus) with various facets. The titles of the individual pieces/movements with their respective garden image are as follows: 1) Hortus Somniorum: afleeting vision of a 'magical' garden 2) Hortus Temporis: a reflection of/on the floral clock described by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) in his [metaphysical] poem The Garden: How well the skilful gardener drewOf flowers and herbs this dial newWhere from above the milder sunDoes through a fragrant zodiac run;And as it works the industrious beeComputes its time as well as we.How could such sweet and wholesome hoursBe reckoned but with herbs and flowers! 3) Hortus Cantus: A garden in which nature 'sings' (praises) in the manner of a 'chorale prelude' and ending with the cantus firmus transformed into bells. 4) Hortus Infinitatis: A meditative/formal garden representing Time suspended in the form of a palindromic prolation canon combined with a harmonic ground (chaconne). 5) Saltatio Hortensis: A (summer) garden of dancing celebratory nature. Its essence (and that of the entire cycle both metaphorically and structurally/formally) is summed up in words spoken by Miranda in WH Auden's 1944 Tempest [Shakespeare]-inspired poem The Sea And The Mirror;So to remember our changing garden weAre linked as children in a circle dancing.
