As one of the three canticles from the New Testament, the Magnificat - the Canticle of Mary - has at all times held a prominent position in church music. Telemann's setting of Luther's German translation of the text bears eloquent witness both to the composer's rich imagination and to his ability to mold a variety of musical shapes into a coherent formal Baroque architecture. Four solo movements with colorfully contrasting instrumentation are juxtaposed with four emphatically homogeneous choral movements; all of the latter are in 6/8 meter and in motet setting with instruments doubling colla parte. Particularly the choral movements are characterized by lively text portrayal and a wealth of at times dramatic imagery. A work of exceptional magnetism for both listeners and choir singers! Score and part available separately - see item CA.3912200.

With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.7005300.

With songs that paint both stately majesty and pastoral elegance, God of All Beginnings is a collection of exceptional liturgical music from Michael Joncas. “A Time of Jubilee” and the title track “Praise the God of All Beginnings” have all the dignity and grandeur necessary for a solemn procession while the sweet tenderness of “Holy Mary, Full of Grace” provides a wonderful alternative to your usual Marian repertoire. “The Goodness of the Lord: Psalm 89 for the Chrism Mass” possesses rich harmonic texture, and the lush orchestration of “Sacred This Banquet,” illuminates this glorious Kwatera communion text. Practical ranges, singable melodies, and superior choral writing make this collection extremely versatile. There is something in this collection for every choir and congregation. Contents: Christ Be Near at Either Hand • Like a Bird That Spreads Her Wings • Praise the God of All Beginnings • A Time of Jubilee • Canticle of the Three Young Men • Canticle of Mary • The Goodness of the Lord • Holy Mary, Full of Grace • O Source of All in Time and Space • We Must Glory in the Cross • Sacred This Banquet, Holy Our Feast • The Earth Is Turning Toward the Sun .
