Score-Johnnie Vinson has expertly adapted two movements from this well-known suite by Peter Warlock based on 16th-century dance music. 'Basse-Dance' is a stately and moderate tempo dance in 3/4 while 'Mattachins' is an energetic sword dance in 2/4. The unique stylings and at times unusual harmonies have been preserved in these delightful setting for beginning players. (2:20)

Danceries Set II arranged for brass band was first commission by Keith Allen for the Birmingham Symphonic Winds. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in the popular Danceries (Set I) of using tunes and dances from Playford s Dancing Master (17th century) to form the basis of an extended dancesuite. In this set the melodies have become more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms. As before each movement is self-contained colourful and direct with its own distinct mood.The outer movements Jennie s Bawbee and Peascod s Galliarda share driving percussion with a military air. Tom Tinker s Toye and Heart s Ease(movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. Kevin Volans' String Quartet No. 9: Shiva Dances was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and first performed by the Smith Quartet at the 2004 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.Kevin Volans (the composer) notes on the piece:In the past I have been interested in trying to go beyond historicism (1970s) beyond style(1980s) and beyond form (1990s) in my work. Looking back over the music of the twentiethcentury I was struck by the fact the nearlyall of it is extremely 'busy' almost cluttered. Italmost seemed that composers felt compelled to look industrious. In the new millennium Ithought it would be interesting to try and eliminate content. I also aspired to movingfrommusic (sound as art) to art (art as sound). This of course has already been done by a numberof composers (many from New York Phil Niblock and La Monte Young to name but two) butit was something I had never tried.AlthoughI found it annoying that the label 'minimalist' was given to my African-based work and fearing this would make the label stick I set out to write a piece which reflected my loveof minimal painting and architecture. The Japanesehave a term 'wabi' meaning 'voluntarypoverty' or 'emptiness' to describe their restrained minimal aesthetic an aesthetic which however pays greatest attention to the quality of material and fine detail. I like to think thatthelack of excessive pitch material in this piece reflects a kind of voluntary poverty.When Shiva is portrayed dancing (as Nataraj) He is depicted in a circle of flames crushing asmall figure the ego underfoot.You get theimpression He dances on the spot not movingaround at all. John Luther Adams' Five Yu'pik Dances for solo Harp. Composed in 1991. Duration: 7-8 minutes. 'This set of miniatures is based on traditional dance songs of the Yupik Eskimo people ofWestern Alaska. In their original forms these melodies would be sung in unsion. The first third and fifth songs would be accompanied by frame drums. The second and fourth are game songs for jumping rope andjuggling pebbles. Aside from the obvious difference in instrumentation my settings of these songs differ from the Yup'ik originals in other respects. I have extended and varied the melodies and addedcountermelodies ostinato figurations introductions interludes and codas. The first four melodies are drawn from the collection Yup'ik Eskimo songs compiled by Thomas F. Johnston and Tupou L. Pulu andpublished by the University Of Alaska. The fifth was 'loaned' to me by Yup'ik singer and dancer Chuna McIntyre who learned it in his village of Eek Alaska. The poems preceding each piece are rough translationsof the words to the songs. These verses are often cryptic and enigmatic. Their obscurity is increased because some of the words or their meanings have been lost over time.' - John Luther Adams

‘Four Easy Dances’ is a four-part suite from Gobelin’s ’Flexy Band Collection’. This series is meant for starter ensembles i.e. youth orchestras which may not have the full range of instruments available yet. Therefore it is possible to combine various instruments. ‘Four Easy Dances’ comes from the ‘Flexy 3 Series’ and can in principle be played by only three instruments completed with three percussion instruments. ‘Four Easy Dances’ consists of: 1. Hop Skip and Jump 2. Little Polka 3. Spanish Dance (castanets are obligatory) and finally 4. Tango.
