Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) is best known for his Carnival of the Animals and Organ Symphony. Yet his Fantasy in E flat major arranged for Cornet or Trumpet and Piano remains popular in the advanced repertoire for the instruments. Saint-Saëns entered the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of thirteen where he studied Organ and composition. He then went on to have a successful career as an organist and composer writing his Fantasy in E flat major in 1857. The piece was originally composed for the Organ but Henri Busser (1872-1973) recognised the work's significance and arranged it for Cornet orTrumpet with Piano accompaniment. To this day Fantasy in E flat major remains prominent in the advanced brass player's repertoire.

Danse Macabre, or Dance of Death, is one of the most famous works by Camille Saint-Saëns. The composition is based on the poem of the same name by Henri Cazalis (1840-1909).The dance of death is musically represented with various effects, starting with twelve strokes of the clock - which of course suggest midnight. Then dissonant sounds and a somewhat wistful waltz melody follow. A thematic build-up full of tempo changes leads to an intense majestuoso, which ends abruptly, after which a melancholy farewell melody takes over. The three piano sonatas by Joachim Raff (1822-1882), representing his three main creative phases, occupy a special position among his more than 100 piano pieces. They reflect a significant compositional aspiration whereas Raff otherwise frequently leans towards the salon-music genre in his piano music. Raff composed the early sonata op. 14 in 1844 after his first works were positively evaluated and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy had encouraged him to venture a career as a composer. The Fantasie-Sonate [Fantasy Sonata] in d minor op. 168, Raff wrote in 1871 at the height of his fame as one of Germany's then most-played composers. Its dedication to Camille Saint-Saens shows his opposition to the rampant German disapproval of France and its music representatives in the wake of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71. The second version of the sonata op. 14, composed in the fall of 1881, had only the opus number in common with the earlier version.
