Rio Nido is based on the bossa nova groove, which originated in Brazil. The feel is relaxed throughout, and played in a very unhurried manner. The song has an AABA form, with the melody being passed between the brass and woodwind sections every eight bars before a short interlude into the solo section. Following the solos, a brief shout chorus is heard before the song recaps at the bridge. The piece concludes with a tag of the last four bars of the song, ending on a unison pitch.

Snowdogs Rock was commissioned by the Central Middle School Jazz Ensemble in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. The piece introduces some different musical elements in the context of a familiar groove (rock) and familiar chord progression (blues). The bridge sections (bars 17-24 and 41-48) feature tone clusters that are somewhat unusual in jazz ensemble pieces. Play the piece on a cold winter's night to heat up the band and the audience!

Minor Madness is a grade 1.5 minor key swing chart. The opening melodic statement features stop time in the rhythm section before moving to a straight-ahead swing feel on the bridge. Material from the introduction is then used as a transition to the solo section. The shout chorus features unison rhythms that are very helpful in getting young players to phrase properly. Introductory material returns at the end, tying the entire piece together.
