Brass Quintet No.2

Suite for Brass Quintet No. 2. Even as a young musician, Otto M. Schwarz played numerous works in the baroque style on the trumpet. Inspired by these student days, he is now composing new works ?in the style of??. We open with a festive Intrada, or entrée, followed by a Galliarde in 6/8 time. The regal and dramatic Sarabande is capped by a rapid 6/8 Finale. This is music that transports us back to the baroque era, when the royal houses of Europe were still centres of power throughout the globe.

Russian-born Victor Ewald (1860-1935) mainly composed for brass instruments. His Symphony for 5-part Brass Choir also known as his Brass Quintet No. 1 Op. 5 remains among his greatest works. It is often thought that Ewald's four quintets are the first original pieces to be composed for the ensemble recognised today as the Brass Quintet. The first of these Symphony comprises three movements; 1) Moderato 2) Adagio-Allegro-Adagio and 3) Allegro Moderato. Including separate parts as well as a full score this edition of Ewald's Symphony for 5-PartBrass Choir is not to be missed by aspiring brass ensembles.

London Rags is largely based on two patriotic tunes God Save The Queen and Rule Britannia. These are used in blues and ragtime transformations and the melodies are not complete until they appear in the form of a classical rag in G major at the end. Commissioned by London Brass at the suggestion of Philip Jones. The first performance was at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London 16 December 1986. Scored for 2 Trumpets Horn Tenor Trombone and Tuba. For Brass Quintet-Joseph Horovitz. Suite of five pieces for brass quintet: two trumpets horn trombone and tuba. Full Score.This work was composed in 1964 at the request of the well known American tuba player Roger Bobo. It was soon taken into the repertoire of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble who gave the first BBC broadcast. The first recording was on Pye records by the Hallé Brass Ensemble. Since then it has become a regular repertoire piece and recorded as well as broadcast all over the world.The Suite consists of five movements all illustrating aspects of the Burlesque Theatre Music Hall circus and cabaret so popular at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th. The titlesof the short movements are: Soubrette Song Trick Cyclists Adagio Team Soft Shoe Shuffle and Les Girls.The five orchestral brass instruments (two trumpets horn trombone and tuba) are exploited in a chamber music manner but the cumulative effect has a theatrical quality in keeping with the title.

In its original form the Suite was written in answer to a commission from the Farnham Festival and was first performed on 11 May 1971. I was however not entirely satisfied with it and did not pass it for publication until 1982 when I revised it in considerable detail. In its revised form it was first performed on 18 June 1983 at Monash University Melbourne.The music requires little explanation. The titles of each of the five movements indicate their character: 'Fanfare'; 'Dance' which has Elizabethan overtones; 'Popular Song' which explores jazz rhythms and harmonies; 'Ceremony' - a solemn chorale; and 'Finale' a light-hearted Rondo with fugal touches. The overallintention is simply to entertain both the players and their audiences.
