Each level provides opportunities to explore Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary works, with original, unaccompanied selections from Levels 5 through 8 that use extended techniques such as multiphonics, key clicks, and bisbigliando. Anthology Album of Urtext Caliber Johannes Brahms could count more prominent musical personalities among his friends than most 19th-century composers. The present anthology album offers a representative selection of piano music by these Brahms friends, foregrounding the second half of the 19th century. Chosen here have been small-scaled works of medium difficulty, which are equally suitable for performance and teaching purposes. The text section outlines, among other things, Brahms's complex rapport with his friends, while the critical report provides information about the sources used and the editorial decisions.

Brahms was one of the great masters of Romantic choral music: not only did he sense how to create a good sound with the human voice, but through the choirs he himself conducted he gained great experience and skill in vocal composition. Alongside large-scale choral works for large forces he also composed a capella pieces to poems by contemporary poets (Rückert and Goethe, for instance), and to the words of German folk songs. Six of these works were selected and translated into Hungarian by Dr. Károly Vargha (1914-1993), who also translated the German texts of several great composers such as Bach, Haydn, and Händel. These six works for mixed choir are published here in twobooks, edited by Lajos Bárdos.

The Four Quartets op. 92 were composed in 1884 during Brahms' summer's stay in Murzzuschlag (Styria). The opening piece, however, was a revision of an earlier vocal quartet composed in 1877. Brahms had announced this to his friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg on 13 November 1877 as a bad joke on music paper with which he was reacting to her reproach regarding an earlier lied (op. 71 No. 4) with an ironic text insertion before the beginning of the reprise. In the revision of 1884, Brahms significantly changed the C-major middle section especially. In the present edition's appendix, the early version of O schone Nacht! is disclosed for rediscovery in comparison with the version published as op. 92 no. 1. The quartets were published on 1 December 1884 by Simrock, one week later, the first public performance of the work took place in the Large Gurzenich Hall in Cologne. The pieces found their primary target audience, however, in private performances as domestic music. Even today, they recommend themselves for smaller choral scorings or ensembles with piano accompaniment. The night-time melancholic text selection with works by Daumer, Hebbel and Goethe seems fit for these.

Brahms famously described this piece as certainly not difficult to play, and while easier than some of his other very challenging works, it is still a quality performance piece. The SONATA NO 1 is written as a solo with more of a duet feel between the cello and piano, creating a beautiful interweaving of harmony and melody. This piece written in three movements shows Brahms' influence by Bach in it's more classical and structured style. A beautiful selection to add to any cellist's repertoire.

Written by noted scholar and conductor Dennis Shrock, Choral Diversity is a presentation of composers throughout history who represent the broad and diverse canon of choral music. Included are twenty women composers and ten composers of color, many of whom have been previously underrepresented in studies and in performances. Each chapter presents overviews of the composer’s life and choral output, information and analysis of selected compositions, including complete texts and literal translations not found elsewhere, and guidelines that address related and important aspects of performance. Importantly, Shrock approaches choral diversity from multiple perspectives. Most notably, the book highlights the music of women composers—such as Hildegard von Bingen, Amy Beach, and Undine Smith Moore—as well as composers of color, including José MaurÃcio Nunes Garcia, William Grant Still, and Margaret Allison Bonds, among others. Rounding out his approach, Shrock also explores the lesser-known works of familiar composers such as Palestrina and Brahms. The book’s repertoire, too, represents a diversity of musical periods, styles, and genres—including chants, madrigals, chansons, motets, partsongs, oratorios, cantatas, and vocal chamber pieces—all of which are intended to be accessible to regular school, church, and community choruses. With its broad scope and scholarly authority, Choral Diversity is the ideal resource for conductors at all levels looking to diversify their concert programming in a practical and historically informed way. Dennis Shrock is author of ten books, three published by Oxford University Press and the remaining seven published by GIA Publications. He has held faculty positions at Boston University, Westminster Choir College, and the University of Oklahoma. He has also served as Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and was a lecturer and member of the conducting staff at Yale University. Shrock received his master’s and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.

Romantic Trio Music (1st violin, 2nd violin or viola, cello) is a selection of works by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Rossini and Grieg. The range of these pieces does not extend beyond the first position, but to perform them stylishly well-developed bow control is necessary, which requires two or three years of instrumental study. These valuable pieces provide the incomparable experience of shared music-making even for more advanced players.
