In this sparkling composition, Harm Evers lets the trumpet section show off their style and versatility. Blow The Trumpets opens with an exciting passage that gives the trumpeters' tonguing free rein. This is then contrasted with the melodic and somewhat bluesy character of the interlude Gun uw trompettisten een plaats in de schijnwerpers!

Red Sky at Morning is a great piece for teaching young musicians to play long phrases and expressive dynamics. The brass players blow air through their instruments (without buzzing) at the beginning and the end to imitate the wind and waves of the sea. The melody in the minor mode portrays the uncertainty one might feel on a ship with inclement weather on the way.

Nordanvind is a tour de force symphonic rhapsody that is built on three Scandinavian folk songs. Composer Carl Strommen has composed these Viking-influenced melodies into a concert setting that brings out all of the history of the Scandinavian people. The piece is at times bold and aggressive, at other times beautiful. Carl employs all of the instrumental colors of the concert band to create a new work for more advanced ensembles.Modern Scandinavians are descendants of the Vikings, an adventuresome people who were known for their love of the sea, their naval prowess, and as fierce fighters . The Scandinavian Vikings were warriors from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden who traded, raided and settled in various parts of Europe, Russia, the North Atlantic islands, and the northeastern coast of North America .Starting around 1850, over one million Swedes left their homeland for the United States in search of religious freedom and open farm land . Augustana College was founded in 1860 by graduates of Swedish universities and is located on the Mississippi River in Rock Island, Illinois . Home of the “Vikings,” Augustana College is the oldest Swedish- American institution of higher learning in the United States . This powerful and lively piece takes inspiration from Swedish history and from Swedish folk songs and hymns .Havsdrake (Dragon of the Sea)The Nordanvind or “North Wind” blows a cold wind during a journey of a group of courageous Viking rowers . The “Dragon-ship” or long ships designed for raiding and war was a sophisticated, fast ship able to navigate in very shallow water . To musically portray these magnificent seafaring vessels, the director is encouraged to use an Ocean Drum (or a rain stick) during the introduction . Wind players may consider blowing air through their instruments to suggest the North wind . Adding men’s voices to accompany the haunting low brass and percussive “rower” sounds can be helpful in creating the dark and ominous portrayal of Viking adventurers .Slangpolska efter Byss - KalleIn Sweden, a “polska” is a partner dance where the dancers spin each other (släng in Swedish “to sling or toss”) . Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle is attributed to Byss-Kalle, who was a notable Swedish folk musician, specifically a nyckelharpa player . Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle is a traditional “polska” dance song most often played on the Nyckelharpa or keyed fiddle and is commonly heard in pubs and at festive events throughout Sweden . Approximately 10,000 nyckelharpa players live in Sweden today, and the Swedish and the American Nyckelharpa Associations are dedicated to this Swedish National instrument . The director is encouraged to share video and audio examples of the nyckelharpa playing the original Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle .Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara (Children of the Heavenly Father)Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara Is a traditional Swedish melody, possibly of German roots, and was believed to be arranged as a hymn by the Swedish hymn writer, Karolina Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg (1832–1903) . As a daughter of a Swedish Lutheran minister, she began writing poems as a teenager and is said to have written over 1,700 different texts . There are two different accounts as to the inspiration for this hymn . The first story is that Lina (as she was called) wrote the hymn to honor her father and to say thank you to him for raising her and protecting her . A second belief is of her witnessing the tragic death of her father . She and her father were on a boat, when a wave threw her father overboard . It was said that the profound effect of watching her father drown is what caused Lina to write the text to this hymn . Although this is a treasured song to people of Swedish descent everywhere, it speaks to all people about a father tending and nourishing his children, and protecting them from evil .SPS71FThe Augustana College Concert BandFounded in 1874, the Augustana Band program is one of the oldest continuously active collegiate band programs in the country . The Concert Band is one of two bands on campus and was formed more than thirty years ago . The Concert Band attracts students of every skill level and from a wide variety of majors . Students in the ensemble play a large part in choosing their music for performance, which include works from the standard repertoire, orchestral transcriptions, and the latest compositions from leading composers .Rick Jaeschke began his musical career as a clarinet player in the 1st US Army Band . He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Susquehanna University, a Masters of Music from James Madison University, and a doctorate from Columbia University in New York . He was also fortunate to study conducting with Donald Hunsburger and with Frederick Fennell .Dr . Jaeschke taught band and choir at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland, and for fifteen years, he was the district Music Supervisor in Armonk, New York, where he taught high school concert and jazz bands, beginning band, and music technology . During that time, the music program flourished, and the high school band consistently received Gold Medals in the New York State Festivals, as well as in national, and international festivals . As a clarinet and saxophone player, Dr . Jaeschke performed in the New York metropolitan area with the Rockland Symphony Orchestra, the Putnam Symphony Orchestra, Fine Arts Symphony Orchestra, and served as the concert master for the Hudson Valley Wind Symphony .For several years, Dr . Jaeschke served as the Fine Arts Coordinator for the District 204 schools in Naperville, IL, a district selected as One of the Best 100 Schools in America for Music . Currently, Dr . Jaeschke is an Associate Professor at Augustana College where he teaches music and music education courses, and directs the Concert Band . He has served on various educational boards, is a National edTPA scorer, and has presented at state, national and international music conferences . Concerto Omaggio to Franz Liszt by Manuel Blancafort, for piano and orchestra. It is the first work that the composer undertook after the blow that supposed the Spanish civil war. In words of the same Blancafort, Finished the war, my first composition, once installed in Sarria, was the Omaggio Concert, finished and released in 1944. It is the most spectacular success in situ that has obtained a work of mine .The work was released day 1 of December of the 1944 by Maria Canals (piano) and the Barcelona Municipal Orchestra, conducted by Eduard Toldra. The composer and music critic Xavier Montsalvatge wrote in La Vanguardia: Blancafort, unconsciously, has been surrended by melody avoiding preciosities, giving free rein to the sincerity and to the simplicity of his feelings, and has created this magnificent concert, in which subjects and harmonization are impregnated of a deep elegance. It requires a group of complete symphony orchestra with soloist piano and it is 40 minutes long.

This setting of the opening to Psalm 102 was composed in the early 1680s. Purcell, who was in his early twenties, had succeeded John Blow as organist of Westminster Abbey around the beginning of the decade and his star was in the ascendant as a court composer. In this piece he pulls off a remarkable compositional coup: a single, gradual climax, lasting over two minutes and culminating on the final repetition of the word 'come', is achieved through a sublime, freely developing eight-part weave of the opening material. The harmonies that result from the chromatic inflections on the word 'crying' all serve the mounting tension in this extraordinary miniature.Studyof the autograph manuscript suggest that this anthem was intended to be the opening part of a larger work which was never completed.

'Concertino for chamber ensemble' was composed in May 1999 for the Esbjerg Ensemble to whom it is also dedicated. The two groups of the ensemble - winds and strings - meet each other in a concertating play along with and against each other - with the drums in the middle to control the battle. The piece - which is in one movement - is subject to the unity of time in the sense that it is urged by a rhythmic motor, which is ticking from beginning to end. A pulse and a tempo. The composition borrows traits of the classic sonata form - and it is own way it tries to - during the continuous conversation of the instruments - to blow life, drama and pleasure in a rhythmic structure - and get the music moving.A.K.

TemA was written in the summer of 1968. In spite of Ligeti's Aventures it may be considered one of the first compositions in which the breathing plays a role as an accoustically transmitted energy process (Holliger, Globokar, Kagel, Schnebel and Stockhausen in Hymnen have already worked on this phenomenon independently of each other and from different points of view). Moreover, temA marks for me the first step into that musique concrete instrumentale in which the mechanical conditions of the sound production are incorporated into the composition. This characterizes my later pieces such as Kontrakadenz, Air, Pression etc. more consistently. In temA, unlike what happened in my previous works, the naturalistic extreme cases were consciously accepted but at the same time integrated into a very rigorous musical context which was also to give a new meaning to the traditional playing conceptions. The violation of the tabus felt in the nearly 70s (not only regarding this piece) lay to a less degree in the phenomenon of the sound deformation (snoring, pressed strings, soundless blowing etc.), since such an alienation was perfectly tolerated as an humoristic, dadaistic or expressionistic element. Rather the shock was caused by the technical logic of the movements which rendered relative the sheer surrealistic effect and had to be taken seriously instead of in an humoristic way.(Helmut Lachenmann, translation: Roger Clement)CD:Linda Hirst, Martin Fahlenbock, Lucas Fels CD Montaigne Auvidis MO 782023ensemble phorminxCD WER 6682 2Bibliography:Hiekel, Jorn Peter: Escaped from Paradise? The heartachingly beautiful Tallis Remembered is a timeless little piece composed by outstanding British composer Peter Hope for the 2013 William Alwyn Festival, where it featured a violin instead of the clarinet. The work was inspired by Wendy Cope’s wistful poem ‘Tallis’s Canon’ and is effectively a set of through-composed variations on Tallis’s well-known tune. A recording of the work can be heard on the CD 'Windblown: Sonatas for Wind Instruments by Peter Hope'. It has been regularly featured on Radio 3.Hope has written and arranged for many internationally known names, including Jose Carreras and Kiri te Kanawa, and other composers including John Williams and James Horner. His original compositions include the Suite: Ring of Kerry (which won an Ivor Novello Award in 1968/9), a Trumpet Concerto, performed by Elgar Howarth, a Concertino for bassoon and orchestra, recorded by Graham Salvage with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, and a Recorder Concerto, recorded by John Turner with the Manchester Camerata Ensemble. His Bramall Hall Dances, for recorder and guitar/piano are published by Forsyth Brothers Ltd. and have become a standard repertoire work for the recorder.

Of the four overtures that Beethoven composed for his only opera, the “Leonore Overture” No. 3 is the most popular. The first reviewer found fault with it for its “incessant dissonances and overblown fluttering of the violins” (Wiener Theater-Zeitung, 1806), but it soon became famous as “one of the most imposing, difficult, yet richest and strangest of compositions” (Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung, 1810). This version of the “Leonore Overture” quickly established itself independently of the stage in the concert hall and has found a lasting place in the symphonic repertoire. The editor has devoted herself to the complex genesis of the various “Leonore Overture” versions, in particular the question whether the trumpet call in measures 272–277 and 294–299 should be played by one or two instruments. The edition is based on the Complete Edition of the “Works of Ludwig van Beethoven” issued by the G. Henle publishing company.

Ride the Wind by Mark Wood showcases how pop/rock music fits perfectly with orchestras. The song starts with tremolo building into the downbeat---from a light breeze to a strong wind blowing and flying in the air. The middle section adds arpeggios and solos for the first violin, building up to a key change finale. This composition features soaring melodies and rockin' cellos and bass! For string orchestra with optional rock rhythm section parts. (2:40)Download Play-Along Track

Commissioned by Boston Musica Viva with funds provided by Catherine and Paul Buttenwieser, premiered on March 15, 2002, in Boston, directed by Richard Pittman, Wu Yu is composed for flute, clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), bassoon, violin, cello and percussion (vibraphone, bongo, Japanese high woodblock, cymbal, 2 Chinese gongs, tom-tom and bass drum), in two movements. Wu Yu was a ritual dance in ancient China, which includes song and dance performed with ox tails in hands. It's a ceremony of praying to the deity for rain. In the first movement of my composition Wu Yu, I use the flute, clarinet and bassoon to play in heterophonic style, imitating the tunes played by a group of suona players in a village ceremony (the blowing instrument suona is a shawm, made with wood), while using other instruments to create sheng-like sustained chords (the Chinese traditional instrument sheng is a free-reed mouth-organ, made with a gourd). The music starts slowly, and gets faster and faster towards the coda. In the second movement, I imitate a whole group of Chinese traditional percussion instruments played in the folk ensemble music Shifan Gong-and-drum in Southeast China, which is often used in ceremonies and village gatherings. The music is brought to a climax at the end of the work. The whole piece lasts about 14 minutes. --Chen Yi.
