Alpina Brass was the test piece for the first division of the Fêtes Cantonales on 8 and 9 June 2019 in Naters, Switzerland. It consists of three movements, and features a variety of aspects, as is common for a competitionwork. However, as a whole, it has been written in such a way that it can perfectly serve as a concert work as well. It is a challenging piece for every section and offers colourful and melodic as well as spectacular rhythmicsequences and a most impressive ending! 43 Bel Canto Studies by Marco Bordogni (1789-1856) is a set compiled and edited by Chester Roberts. Initially composed for vocalists, it was transcribed and adapted for tuba or bass trombone. Ideal for developing the range of the tessiture, it also has a strong musicality. Bass trombone players could also find it hugely beneficial for developing their technique. Marco Bordogni (1789-1856) was an Italian operatic tenor and a singing professor who was based in Paris. He performed in several of Rossini's operas and was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1839. He also had a lot of influence on one of his famous students, the English tenor Sims Reeves.

‘Whence is that Goodly Fragrance Flowing?’ is the first line of an old French Christmas song that originated in the 17th century. In 1728 John Gay used this joyous and markedly festive melody that honours Jesus Christ and His miraculous birth in his Beggar’s Opera. Philip Sparke has given this melody a new lease of life with his charming and imaginative arrangement for the Christmas season.

Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled ‘Trostlied’ literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach’s use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan’s arrangement the choral is heard twice, once, alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time, without interruption, reflecting the composer’s original intention - a song of consolation.
