Since its original publication in 1971, A Community Mass has become a staple for many parishes. Due to its wide use and inclusion in various denominational hymnals, additional material and new instrumentations were periodically created by the composer. These enrichments have made A Community Mass adaptable to a variety of circumstances and forces-from cantor, assembly, and organ to performances by choir and assembly with small or large instrumental ensembles in addition to organ. Thus an ordinary setting is transformed into a festive setting in the appropriate liturgical context. The current edition contains Proulx's own alterations for incorporating the 2010 Revised Order of Mass.

What has made this Mass rise to the top in popularity in parishes across the English-speaking world? Its adaptability. From parishes with keyboard and/or guitar and cantor to cathedrals with a large SATB choir and multiple instruments (organ, brass quartet, timpani, handbells), Mass of Wisdom has proven itself as a “Mass for the masses.” Its step-wise melodic patterns make it easy to learn without sounding musically trite in any way. Music directors agree that the through-composed Gloria is one of the most finely crafted of all the new musical settings of the prayer. That fine crafting extends to all components of this Mass, especially the acclamations sung during the Eucharistic Prayer. The multi-layered Hosannas in the Sanctus will delight the members of the choir as well as the singing assembly. This is a Mass setting that simply soars. It is a perfect setting for Ordinary Time, but music directors tell us that the Christmas and Easter seasons are made more glorious and joyful when this setting is sung, especially when the additional instrumentation is added. Dioceses and parishes that employed Mass of Wisdom as the first setting during the implementation of the new translation have found themselves returning to it time and time again. It truly has become part of the “Catholic musical DNA” across the United States and beyond.

Before the implementation of the new translation of The Roman Missal, the Mass of Redemption enjoyed a high level of popularity in parishes across the country and beyond. With the advent of the new translation, this Mass has become even more popular. Steve Janco rewrote the Gloria for the new translation and his through-composed setting is energetic and bright, bringing a sparkle to the new text. The Mass is written in the bright key of D major, bringing a joyful quality to the celebration of Sunday Mass, especially during the Christmas and Easter seasons, as well as the Sundays of Ordinary Time. Set for cantor, choir, assembly, keyboard, and guitar (with optional instrumental parts for brass quartet and timpani, two woodwinds, and handbells), the choral writing is in two parts (SA/TB) with optional third voice, often a soprano descant, at climaxes in various sections. Music directors agree that the simple choral arranging makes this a setting appropriate for parishes that do not have the musical “forces” to sing many of the more vocally complex Mass settings. Mass of Redemption brings the choir, musicians, and assembly together in a symphony of praise and thanksgiving for the great gift of redemption in Christ—a wonderful setting to raise hearts and voices to God at Sunday Mass. Join the hundreds of parishes that have made Mass of Redemption a musical staple and a reliable setting of the Mass. Parishes simply never grow weary of singing this setting! Highlights: Highly popular among parishes before the implementation of new texts, now even more widely used! Written in the key of D major, bringing jubilance to the celebration of Mass. A variety of options for instrumentation with simple choral arrangements—ideal for smaller choirs. A delightful setting for the Christmas and Easter seasons and ideal for Sundays during Ordinary Time. .

In 1988, GIA released Michael Joncas’s No Greater Love, a flexible mass setting offering cathedral-style music that was accessible to the singing assembly. Beautiful melodies enhanced by SATB choir and extensive orchestrations were the hallmark of this best-selling work. Now, Michael Joncas has revised this treasured setting using the 2010 Revised Order of Mass. The revision has a new through-composed Gloria that can be sung in unison during the Sundays of Ordinary Time, and for more festive occasions, one can add the optional instrumental and SATB choral parts. Also new to this setting are the gospel acclamation and a sung setting of the prayer of the faithful. The memorable congregational parts for the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei haven’t changed and the much-loved Holy, Holy has been adapted to accommodate the 2010 Revised Order of Mass text. The optional orchestration is now reduced and includes string quartet, flute, and oboe parts.

The Mass of St. Patrick, was commissioned for the celebration of the 800th anniversary of the founding of Ballintubber Abbey, famously known as the abbey that “refused to die.” As with so many of Liam Lawton’s compositions, his gift for melody grows out of the rich, lyric music tradition of his native Ireland. Unmistakably Celtic in style, the the mass features simple harmonic textures which are enhanced by a C Instrument part woven throughout. The mass is set primarily in D major, making it accessible for Irish traditional instruments. The Mass of St. Patrick is a pleasing setting that your congregation will enjoy singing.

In 1984, Marty Haugen released his Mass of Creation. For the next thirty years it enjoyed the distinction of being perhaps the most performed mass setting in Roman Catholic worship. Now, more than five years after the release of the revised Order of Mass 2010, the revised edition of Mass of Creation has once again surfaced as the most popular setting in the GIA catalog. In response to its popularity, Marty has crafted two eucharistic prayer settings: Eucharistic Prayer III (with five varied prefaces) and Eucharistic Prayer II for Children, complete with all the additional acclamations.
