“The idea behind this song is to remind everyone, for all those who have forgotten, how colourful and exciting Christmas was during their childhood. Christmas is a magical time and, after all, no matter how old we are, we are all still children at heart.” These words were written by Chris de Burgh about his 2009 hit, The Bells of Christmas, inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Simon Fahnholz has now made an excellent version of this Christmas hit for concert band.

The Latin word Introitus means ‘entry’. Originally, this was a psalm sung to accompany the entrance of a bishop, priest or celebrant into the church. Later it was incorporated into the mass with alternating sung and spoken text, reflecting the mood of the liturgy. Satoshi Yagisawa has lived in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture in Japan since he was in elementary school. Around Christmas time every year in Ichikawa City, seven Chiba high school bands hold a joint concert. For the 20th anniversary the composer was asked to write a piece to be performed to close the concert. This piece was first performed in 2010 by Tadashi Yoshida, conductor and close friend of Satoshi Yagisawa, with a combined wind orchestra from Chiba Prefectural Kokubun High School, Chiba Prefectural Ichikawa Nishi High School, Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Mutsumi High School, Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Akiyama High School, Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Yakiri High School,Chiba Prefectural Funabashi Nishi High School and Chiba Prefectural Shiroi High School. The title was chosen from suggestions submitted by participating students. Dream Cruise was chosen by Satomi Otsu, a junior in Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Mutsumi High School Wind Orchestra. The composer skillfully scored this piece and created the chorus part so that all the hundreds of students could participate in the performance. This version has been revised so it can be played without the chorus part.

Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886) is known nowadays mainly as an opera composer and the composition teacher of Giacomo Puccini and Pietro Mascagni. He scored his greatest success in 1876 at La Scala Milan with the opera La Gioconda, a work which is still in the repertoire of the major opera houses. Ponchielli's sacred works were composed in his later years, when he was maestro di cappella at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. There his Mass in A major op. 20 (also known as Messa per la notte di natale) was premiered on Christmas Day 1882. The Mass is captivating because of its flowing, singable melodies, rich harmonies, and warm tonal colors. The important role given to the chorus, with which the three male soloists interact closely, is striking. The first music edition of the Messa is a real discovery for choirs with good male voices; the second tenor part can largely be sung by the baritones.

The First Nowell is a traditional Christmas song that can be traced back to the 18th century. The word ??nowell? is in fact derived the French word for Christmas, ??noel?. The First Nowell is sung in Englishspeaking countries around the world, although the actual text may vary by region and local customs. The simple and beautiful melody has made this carol a Christmas favourite. Lorenzo Bocci turns the melody into an elegant flexible four-part arrangement.

Christmas is full of customs and traditions, both old and new. This is especially evident in Christmas songs, some of which have been part of Christian worship for centuries. A Medieval Christmas combines three ancient melodies that are still popular around the world today. Philip Sparke chose Gaudete, a song of praise from the middle ages, Coventry Carol, an English song from the 14th century, and In dulci jubilo, which can also be traced back to the 14th century, to form this joyous suite.
