Par DVORAK ANTONIN. For several years following composition of his first piano quartet, Dvorák?s publisher Simrock pushed him to compose a follow-up piece in the genre. The work, written during a few short weeks in summer 1889, fulfilled Simrock?s wishes. With his op. 87, Dvorák delivered a challenging and mature work in which a mastery of form is combined with memorable themes and surprising harmonic turns, leading it quickly to conquer the hearts of both performers and audiences. After working for three years at the NationalConservatory in New York, Dvorak returnedhome in 1895 feeling extraordinarily happy. The fruit of this ecstatic periodare thecomposer's last two string quartets. The Quartet in G major, Op. 106, waswrittenimmediately after his return from America. The collection of twelve pieces for String Quartet Cypresses is a loose paraphrase of the original cycle of love songs bearing the same name which Dvorak produced when he was twenty-four. Later on he re-wrote some of the songs and incorporated them into other song cycles; he took a larger selection and recreated them in 1887 as lyrical miniatures for String Quartet. Cypresses in this form less still the original song version were never published during the composer's lifetime. À l'automne 1895, suite à son retour définitif de New York, Dvo?ák reprend son activité de professeur au Conservatoire de Prague. Ce retour au pays semble avoir donné un coup de fouet à son énergie créatrice car en seulement quatre semaines il compose un Quatuor en Sol majeur qui - avec celui en La bémol majeur op. 105 - couronne sa production de musique de chambre. Dans ce nouveau quatuor, des échos de musique populaire bohémienne se mélangent à des thèmes chantants, tandis que le développement des motifs révèle un maître au sommet de son art.
