Bruckner began composing the Eighth Symphony, his last completed symphony, in July 1884, working mainly during the summer vacations from his duties at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory. When he finished the work's revelatory finale, he signed it Hallelujah, and reported enthusiastically, The Finale is the most significant movement of my life. Following the premiere performance, a peer composer penned, Its success was almost without precedent. It was the absolute victory of light over darkness. This work leaps to life with awe-inspiring power in this first-ever setting for string orchestra with optional timpani. Transposed from its original key of C minor/major to D minor/major, the music sits nicely for all parts, ready for any concert or festival. The conductor should encourage students to vary the bow lanes, weight, and speed to produce powerful forte and expressive piano dynamics. Encourage mature players to make expressive fingering choices and to use vibrato. Students should practice coloring the tone and intensity through bowing lanes, variable bow weight, and appropriate bow speeds.Bruckner began composing the Eighth Symphony, his last completed symphony, in July 1884, working mainly during the summer vacations from his duties at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory. '... a witty succession of colourful orchestral images' - this is how the theatre critic Ludwig Speidel characterised the structure of the individual movements of Bruckner's Symphony No. 2. The only constant element in there: the rests occurring with reliable regularity which earned the work the nickname Symphony of Rests. While the Viennese Philharmonic, referring to the work's unplayability, refused to perform the world premiere of the symphony in 1872, it achieved its first major success only one year later under the baton of Bruckner.

The three-movement piece refers to Bruckner's music in different ways: in the first movement, Hummel used the initials A-B and the beginning of the main theme from Symphony No. 8; in the second movement, the first four tones of the 'Adagio' from Symphony No. 9 play a major role, and the third movement, a toccata-like finale, gets its life from further tone sequences and motifs of Bruckner. The work ends in a majestic climax. This piece is a rather demanding, yet rewarding piece for any interpreter, and its performance in the church is extremely effective.

Anyone who is familiar with Bruckner’s symphonies and great masses will probably be astonished upon hearing his Missa solemnis of 1854: can the tradition of the Viennese classics still be so clearly evident in a work by Bruckner? And yet, isn’t it also possible to hear much of Bruckner’s later style? With this edition, the earliest of Bruckner’s orchestral masses is now available as an Urtext edition. It reflects the latest scholarly research, and the complete performance material is available on sale. Compared with Bruckner’s late masses, the demands on chorus and soloists are considerably less. The horns play in just two movements and can be replaced by trombones. This rarely performed work offers many choirs an exciting alternative to the better-known masses – not only for the Bruckner anniversary in 2024! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2790100.
