On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, the ensemble Music From China commissioned Chen Yi for a new work, which became Three Dances from China South, scored for Chinese instruments. Its three descriptive movements (Lions Playing Ball, Bamboo Dance, Lusheng Dance) are each inspired by folk dances from the southeastern provinces of China.My chamber ensemble work Three Dances From China South is commissioned by Music From China tocelebrate its 30th anniversary, and scored for Chinese traditional instruments dizi, erhu, pipa, and zheng. The commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical CommissioningProgram, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.  The world premiere is given at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall in New York City, on November 21, 2014.  My Three Dances From China South is dedicated to Susan Cheng, the founder and Executive Director of Music From China, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of MFC. There are three movements in my Three Dances From China South for dizi, erhu, pipa, and zheng.  Thematerial in the first movement Lions Playing Ball is drawn from a folk tune played in the accompanyingensemble for the folk dance under the same title in Chaozhou region in Guangdong province.  The image of the folk dance is vivid and entertaining.  The movement includes several variations on the theme.  The variation methods are inspired by the various rhythmic patterns used in the traditional ensemble playing. The melodic material features a special mode with a tritone interval taken from the folk tune.  There are also lyrical sections with polyphonic layers in the variations.The music in the second movement is inspired by the folk Bamboo Dance, which is popular in Li minoritypeople from Hainan Island in the south.  The aged old folk dance is for ritual ceremony and harvest celebration in the history, in which there are pairs of people holding the ends of the long bamboo rods and clapping them loudly in stable pulse, for groups of dancers to dance between the bamboo shapes on the floor, in musical rhythms and ensemble patterns.  A musical motive with a jumping interval and articulation is used throughout the movement.The third movement is called Lusheng Dance.  I have witnessed the folk dance performance of the Dong minority people in Guangxi province in the 1980’s.  The exciting scene inspired me to imitate the large lusheng ensemble playing style in my ensemble of four Chinese instrumental musicians without using the sheng (a wind instrument with metal pipes that is popular in concert music, and similar to the folk lusheng).  On top of the rhythmic patterns, I imitated a two--voice folk song of Zhuang minority people in the same province.  The melody is played by the leading erhu and dizi.—Chen Yi.

He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band’s foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese ‘Junishi’. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Energetic playing, phrasing, melodic music making, technique and a spectacular finale make this work a perfect test or concertwork! It was premiered at the Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific on Jan. 27, 2007 in Stockton, California.The first movement is inspired by the Tibetan folk tune “Du Mu†as played on a recorder (Xiongling). This music presents the rich gestures of Du Mu (the name of a god in Tibetan Buddhism) in a serene mood.“Dui Xie†is a kind of Tibetan folk ensemble music using the same tune in the introduction and coda, played with the plucked instrument Zhamunie, the bamboo flute, and the fiddle Erhu, often performed with singing and tap dancing. The pitch materials of this movement are drawn from folk ensemble music and the lyrical Tibetan folk song “Amaliehuo.â€.

Balkanya, a suite in three parts composed by Jan Van der Roost, was commissioned by the Music School of Gaillon - Aubevoye (France) for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its creation. Jan Van der Roost dedicated the piece to the director of the school: Thierry Patel.As in his earlier work, Puszta, the composer makes no use of existing dances or themes in these three Balkan dances. This high-spirited suite takes its own approach to the folk music of the Balkan countries and is characterized by unique changes in tempo and spirit. Woodwinds, brass and percussion all have equal parts, making this suite attractive and enjoyable for the entire band.C’est la demande de l’École de Musique de Gaillon - Aubevoye et deson directeur, Thierry Patel, que Jan Van der Roost composa cette suite en trois mouvements pour célébrer le 20ème anniversaire de la création de cette École de Musique. Comme ce fut le cas pour Puszta, ces trois danses des Balkans sont des compositions originales ; il ne s’agit donc pas d’arrangements de danses ou de thèmes existants. Des changements de tempi et d’ambiance caractérisent cette suite enlevée et très personnelle dans son approche de la musique traditionnelle des Balkans. I am delighted to include in this series â?? so far almost totally made up of pieces written for me â?? this piece for guitar and piano composed by Giovanni Scapecchi and dedicated to the duo made up of my former student Raffaello Ravasio, who edited the fingering of the guitar part, and of Samuele Amidei. I am also particularly delighted because this piece was commissioned by the Duo Ravasio-Amidei as part of their full project in homage to Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. In this composition, there are many references to the figure and work of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. First of all the duo guitar-piano is the same as in Fantasia Op. 145 by Castelnuovo-Tedesco (written for Andrés Segovia and Paquita Madrigueira), the most famous piece of the twentieth century composed for this formation. The piece by Giovanni Scapecchi, in the form of a Suite of dances, refers explicitly to the one by the famous dedicatee by means of some references which appear in the Sarabanda and in the Giga. The Crete mentioned in the title are, of course, the famous Senese clays which, with their colours and shapes, make up a remarkable part of the Tuscan landscape. Furthermore, profound meanings are attributed by Giovanni Scapecchi to the earth which makes up the clays (like Castelnuovo-Tedesco, he is a native of Tuscany, where he still lives). The Composer recalls first of all that the book of Genesis tells us that the first man was taken from the earth (there is therefore this primordial connection between man and earth). Moreover, the historic man, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, honoured here, maintained a deep relationship with his homeland â?? despite the dramatic separation due to the enforced exile to the USA, which took place in 1939 following the racial laws. Stylistically, I then found a further link between this piece and its dedicatee â?? who was influenced in his early works by musical Impressionism â?? in a certain French atmosphere running through the Suite.(Piero Bonaguri).

Ports of Call, a suite of five movements for two violins and guitar was written for the Trio Triento for their New York debut. Composed in the Summer of 1992, it was premiered in April 1993. 1992 was the 500th anniversary of the 1492 expulsion of the Jews from Spain and, of course, Columbus' trip to America. To commemorate these important events, I was commissioned by organizations in 20 major cities to write an oratorio. The result was Ever Since Babylon. The musical material was greatly influenced by tunes from around the Mediterranean region. These Sephardic melodies took on treat meaning for me, and I took five of them and expanded them into these five pieces which are actually dances. I felt that the combination of two violins and guitar lent itself well as a vehicle for this music. The names of the cities are used because the tunes originated in these particular locations. Marseille, a typical provencale dance with naturally changing meters and a light, airy, touch. Alexandria, much more mysterious and languid, reflecting the heat and inertia of that glorious city in slow though sometimes steady movement. Salonika, a wild dance in typical Greek fashion celebrating a holiday with abandon. The whirling movement goes relentlessly from beginning to end. Haifa is represented by two beautiful chant-like pastoral tunes which introduce the beauty and luminous quality of this, one of the most beautiful parts in the Eastern Mediterranean. Valencia, the last, a tribute to medieval Spain. The music is a culmination of the influences of the three great cultures, Moslem, Christian, and Jewish, which flourished there for hundreds of years. It is an uplifting dance with just a tinge of sadness in the center, since the Golden Age of which the tune was a part, had come to a tragic end in 1492. --Samuel Adler.

This short piece for recorder and piano, written for the 50th anniversary of the Stockport Recorder College, is an affectionate memory of the double decker trams the composer recalls from his childhood in the 1930s and 40s. The conductor rings the bell, the tram starts, picks up speed and away we go bringing memories of care free days some 80 years ago.Peter Hope has worked for many internationally known names, including Jose Carreras and Kiri te Kanawa, and other leading composers including John Williams and James Horner. The year 2004 marked the 100th anniversary ofthe death of Antonin Dvorák. In 1879 Dvorákwrote this Polonaise as a commission for thecommittee organising the festivities for theirfamous national dance festival. Many famousCzech composers wrote dances specially for thisevent. This Polonaise in three movements, with itsfine melody lines, deserves to be more than just anoccasional work, however. Wil van der Beek’sconcert band arrangement does justice to theoriginal piece.In 1879 schreef Antonin Dvoøák zijn Polonaise in opdracht van het comité dat de festiviteiten voorbereidde voor de toentertijd beroemde ‘vaderlandse danspartijen’. De bekendste Tsjechische componisten werden gevraagd om hiervoordansen te schrijven. Deze driedelige Polonaise met haar fraaie melodielijnen is echter meer dan een gelegenheidswerkje. De bewerking van Wil van der Beek doet het origineel beslist eer aan.Antonin Dvorák, dessen Todestag sich im Jahr 2004 zum 100.
