Angel of Dusk for double bass, two pianos and percussion is a chamber ensemble version of Einojuhani Rautavaara's double bass concerto dating from 1980/1993. The work is dedicated to Olga Koussevitzky, the widow of Sergey Koussevitzky. The Koussevitzky foundation sent Einojuhani Rautavaara to study with Aaron Copland in Tanglewood, and it was Sibelius who chose Rautavaara as the recipient of this scholarship. The solo part has been corrected by the composer in the summer of 2015.

Piano reduction for Einojuhani Rautavaara's Concerto for harp and orchestra (2000) available for the first time (2024)! This product includes also the solo part edited by Kalen Smith. The composer tells about the three-movement work: The concerto is in three movements. After the orchestral introduction, the harp leads into a gradually thickening texture that progresses into a series of powerful culminations. Once these subside, the expansive motifs of the introduction return. The solo is echoed by two harps in the orchestra: I wanted the magnificent sound to be multiplied. The simple melody in the second movement is coloured in a very archaic way by the orchestra; we might imagine the performance of a troubadour or a bard in ancient times. The finale is festive, 'solenne'. It presents the combined sonority of the three harps at its most colourful and melodic.Duration: 23'Orchestra: 2222-4220-12-2hp-str (performance material is available for hire from the publisher). The study score is available for sale (M042091586).Einojuhani Rautavaara (9. October 1928 27. July 2016) is internationally one of the best known and most frequently performed Finnish composers. He was by nature a romantic, even a mystic, as is often apparent from the titles of his works: for example Angels and Visitations for orchestra or his double-bass concerto Angel of Dusk. Despite Rautavaaras label of mysticism he was a complex and contradictory figure whose works cannot be categorized in stylistic terms.

Lauri Kilpiö's (b. 1974) Six Winter Scenes for two pianos (2022) was commissioned by Joensuu Conservatory. The nostalgic memories and different impressions of winter take the technical abilities of the performers into consideration. The short, hazy movement I Blue Dusk Descends brings the winter. The other move-ments include the bright movement II Echoes in a Snowy Forest, the toccata-style movement III Ride through a Blizzard, the glitteringly impressionistic movement IV Ice Skating on the River, the enigmatic movement V Birds on the Snowdrift, and the energetic movement VI Woken Bear Rock, which brings the spring. The suite can be performed in its entirety at a time, or it is also possible to perform only individual movements of it. The same piano duo may perform the whole work, or the performers may also change between the movements.Duration: 14'Osat / MovementsI Sininen hämärä laskeutuu | Blue Dusk DescendsII Kaiut lumisessa metsässä |Echoes in a Snowy ForestIII Ratsastus läpi pyryn | Ride through a BlizzardIV Luistelu joella | Ice Skating on the RiverV Linnut hangella | Birds on the SnowdriftVI Heränneen karhun rock | Woken Bear RockThis product includes one performance score (both piano parts in the same score).

'The piece has been written for Edna Michell's Compassion project. In the composition I follow the idea of a dialogue, suggested by the text I have chosen. The intimate nature and fragile sound world of the duo mirror the fragility of our uncertain existence.' - Kaija Saariaho Light and darkness, night and day. We marvel at the mystery of the stars. Moon and sky, sand and sea. We marvel at the mystery of the sun. Twilight, high noon, dusk and dawn. Though we are mortal, we are Creation's crown. Flesh and bone, steel and stone. We dwell in fragile, temporary shelters. Grant steadfast love, compassion, grace. Sustain us, Lord; our origin is dust. Splendor, mercy, majesty, love endure. We are but little lower than the angels. Resplendent skies, sunset, sunrise. The grandeur of Creation lifts our lives. Evening darkness, morning dawn.
