As a tribute to 18th Century French music as well as to the memory of Francois Couperin Ravel wrote this set of six piano pieces in the form of a suite and dedicated each piece to a friend who had lost his life defending his country in World War One. Although Le Tombeau De Couperin retains the grace clarity and elegance and charm reminiscent of the 18th Century it's harmonies and colouristic effects are unmistakably of the 20th Century.
