In the style of commedia dell'arteIn 1918 Gabriel Faure, then 73 years old, received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell'arte. The four-movement orchestral suite op. 112, consisting of Ouverture, Menuet, Gavotte and Pastorale, combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Faure's last composition for orchestra, the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The op. 112 orchestral suite demonstrates how the composer, now older and more experienced, reworked and improved his earlier music. This scholarly-critical edition of the four-movement Masques et Bergamasques op. 112 is based on Gabriel Faure The Complete Works, Volume IV/2.

The cantata Hochsterwunschtes Freudenfest BWV 194 was composed for an organ dedication on 2 November 1723 in Stormthal, Saxony. A year later, and with just a few alterations, the cantata was performed again in Leipzig on Trinity Sunday. Our edition takes this Leipzig version of 1724 as its source. The special occasion of its composition is reflected in the extent of the composition which has twelve, instead of the usual six, movements. The orchestral scoring is for strings and three obbligato oboes. A special feature of the cantata is its structure as an orchestral suite. The beginning is a spirited opening chorus in the style of a French overture. The bass aria in the third movement has the character of a pastorale, and the following aria (movement 5) in turn has the character of a gavotte, etc. A simple four-part chorale concludes this multifaceted composition, marked by some extremely heartfelt moments.

Sonata 1 opens with a movement marked Sostenuto expressing to perfection the melancholy gracefulness associated with B minor. This is followed by a vivacious Allegro, kaleidoscopic in its ever-changing rhythmic patterns. The sonata concludes with a charming homage to the French style in the form of a gavotte en rondeau. The opening movement of Sonata 2, which has some exquisite harmonic turns, displays what Quantz called the prächtig (magnificent) style, with a pompously striding bass and heavily dotted rhythms for the flute. The following Allegro moderato features jaunty syncopations interspersed with rapid flurries of demisemiquavers. Balicourt concludes with a sparkling ‘applause finale’, frothy but never trivial.

A Haunted Trilogy is guaranteed to become a favorite for student and audience alike. Set as a trilogy of three short movements, your band can play one for a quick novelty piece, or all three as a divertimento or program music. March of the Gremlins opens the suite with an eerie march. Tarantella For Trolls continues the spooky musical fun with a slightly twisted little dance. Goblin’s Gavotte closes our haunted suite with an ominous romp. It’s mischievously impish, looming, conniving, and a great learning piece for chromatics in three different styles. Boo!
