The resoluteness of this original tune is a perfect fit for a Charles Wesley hymn recounting the story of Isaac and Abraham, evoking unswerving faith amid the test of sacrifice. The varied a cappella choral textures in each stanza produce an engaging reflection for congregations encountering this reading from the book of Genesis, particularly in Lenten liturgies or during the Easter Vigil.

The thread of Christ as God's sacrificial lamb is woven throughout scripture. Perhaps the most vivid Old Testament example is Abraham's offering of Isaac. The New Testament reveals that Jesus was offered as God's sacrifice not far from the spot where Abraham laid Isaac on the wood. This Lenten cantata combines the distinguished talents of Mark Hayes (composer), John Parker (lyricist), and Audra Parker (narration) to trace the events of Holy Week from Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his sacrificial death on the cross. This stirring recounting of the final days of Jesus' life also includes an optional resurrection anthem, providing both flexibility and a joyous conclusion to the Holy Week story.

According to the Holy Scriptures, Abraham had a son with Sara, Isaac, who became the progenitor of the Jewish tribes, and a son withHagar, Ishmael, who became the progenitor of the Arab tribes. The French baroque painter Claude Lorrain devoted himself to this subject repeatedly, and Wolfgang-Andreas Schultz follows his conceived picture by setting three musical scenes in delicate soundscapes. The traditionally European instruments of the piano quartet also use stylized Arabian tone figurations so that both cultures are interconnected in this composition which was created in 2011/12 at the time of the Arab Spring.
