Dotzauer was a trained musician who wrote an opera, symphonies, overtures, a Mass, concertos and chamber music. Of his extensive life-work the abundance of educational compositions has proved to be of lasting value in the first place. The idea to compile and publish a selection from his educational life-work that meets the demands of the time emerged at the end of the 19th century already. Of the several publications of this kind the work by Johannes Klingenberg has turned out to be the most successful.

Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer war studierter Cellist und Komponist einer Oper, mehrerer Sinfonien, einer Messe und Kammermusik. Von seinem umfangreichen Werk sind aber vor allem seine pädagogischen Werke, darunter zwei Cello-Schulen und zahlreiche Etüden, heute noch sehr geschätzt. Schon im 19. Jahrhundert gab es Versuche, eine Auswahl davon zusammen zu fassen. Unter diesen hat sich die hier in vier Bänden vorliegende Ausgabe von Johannes Klingenberg am besten bewährt.

The three volumes contain 176 studies by 25 composers. The selection was made according to technical usefulness and musical value. The studies follow in order of the grade of difficulty and are grouped around certain problems. All three volumes can be applied as supplementary material to any flute tutor. Their use should be determined by the progress of the student and not by the class he attends. We recommend the first volume (Z. 8591) for beginners, the second (Z. 8592) one for advanced students on the lower level, the third (Z. 8593) for intermediate students.

In den drei Bänden sind 176 Etüden von 25 Komponisten zusammengestellt worden. Bei der Auswahl wurden die Gesichtspunkte der technischen Nützlichkeit und des musikalisches Wertes berücksichtigt. Die Etüden sind nach Schwierigkeitsgrad geordnet und um jeweils ein Problem gruppiert. Die drei Bände können als Ergänzungsmaterial zu jeder beliebiger Flötenschule angewandt werden. Ihre Anwendung sollte vom Fortschritt des Schülers und nicht von ihrer Klasse abhängen. Der erste Band (Z. 8591) ist Anfängern, der zweite (Z. 8592) Fortgeschrittenen der Grundstufe, der dritte (Z. 8593) den Schülern auf mittlerer Stufe empfohlen.

Les trois volumes contiennent 176 études de 25 compositeurs différents. La sélection a été réalisée selon les requis techniques et la valeur musicale. Les études suivent une progression logique et sont regroupées par thèmes. Les trois volumes peuventêtre utilisés en complément de toute méthode, en fonction des besoins de l’élève. Nous vous recommandons le premier volume (EMBZ8591) pour les débutants, la deuxième (EMBZ8592) pour les élèves d’un niveau intermédiaire et le troisième (EMBZ8593) pourles élèves plus avancés.

'Joseph Sellner (1787-1843) was a famous oboe player of his time. In 1825, Sellner published an oboe tutor in three volumes entitled Theoretisch-Praktische Oboen-Schule. Despite the fact that the instrument has undergone considerable changes and improvements since his time, the majority of Sellner's work has still retained its usefulness to this day. His studies provide valuable help for achieving smooth technique and tone-colour, especially at the beginner level. The obsolete two-part exercises and interval studies written for the instrument of his time have been omitted in this volume. The studies have been arranged here, as opposed to the original sequence, accordingto the order of key signatures.' - Péter Pongrácz

Obwohl sich das Instrument seither verändert hat, ist der Großteil von Sellners Werk heute noch sehr wertvoll - besonders für Anfänger auf der Oboe. Die Etüden in dieser Ausgabe wurden anders als im Original nach Tonarten geordnet.

These short works are not dry finger exercises, but well-rounded little compositions. Die Werke sind keine trockenen Fingerübungen, sondern kleine, abgerundete Kompositionen. Sie geben Hilfe zur Lösung technischer Probleme jeglicher Art, wenn sie die fleißigen Schüler in einem Jahr durchspielen. Am Ende des Bandes wurde als Zugabe ein paar längeren Etüden Platz eingeräumt, welche auch als Vortragstücke gespielt werden können.

It is no accident that this volume makes reference to the title of Haydn's famous piece Il maestro e lo scolare, since the four-hands etudes it contains provide opportunities for teachers and pupils to make music together.
